Hal service
by Mike Chambers
What is needed to hal to run (what service if any) and is HAL for like
plug-n-play type devices or what? Guess I am trying to see if that is
what I need to use my camera with and for any other resource that I may
try in the future.

rhgb failing on recent updates
by Brian C. Huffman
Recently (after the rhgb makeover), rhgb is failing on startup for me.
The only messages that I get are at the top of
the /etc/rhgb/temp/xorg.log and look like this:
_XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: failed to bind listener
_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for
local
This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
[snip]
The end looks like so:
(II) Module synaptics: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 4.3.99.902, module version = 1.0.0
Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 0.5
*** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not
*** be the reason for the server aborting.
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? I have a desktop at home
that have the same updates and it's working properly. Very wierd. This
system goes into X just fine at the end of the boot sequence, so I know
X works.
thanks,
Brian

su - root not workonh anymore

Since the latest 'yum update' I cant execute 'su - root' anymore.
Even the combination Ctrl+Alt+F1 and login:root can login to root.
I can get root access only if I login as root into the graphical desktop.

Permission denied connecting to dbus socket
by Brian C. Huffman
All,After today's updates, both avahi daemon and haldaemon are
failing. Turning syslog on reveals that they're both getting an error
connecting to /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: Permission
Denied.Thoughts? If this is known, is there a temporary
workaround? It's wreaking havoc with NetworkManager and hence nm-applet
too (due to hal).Thanks,Brian

gnome-screensaver issues
by D Canfield
I don't see anything in bugzilla about this, so I'm guessing this is
somehow specific to just me or my hardware, but I'm not sure what would
be the cause:
I've got gnome-screensaver enabled at 10 minutes, and I have the lock
screen option un-checked. At 10 minutes, the screen goes black, but
then I can't get out of the screensaver using the mouse or keyboard. If
I hit ctrl-alt-F1 to switch to a text console, login, and then killall
gnome-screensaver, I can then get back into my X session. But then the
screen starts blanking (and turning off my monitor) every 1 minute if idle.
I'm on a thinkpad T43 with an ATI chipset. Does this make any
difference? Any thoughts?
