yum wants to remove my kernels, why?
by Neal Becker
This is FC5T1 (with some updates from devel).
If I try to run yum update, it says:
Removing:
kernel x86_64 2.6.14-1.1696_FC5 installed 84
M
kernel x86_64 2.6.15-1.1826.2.9_FC5 installed
82 M
Seems to be acting as if it doesn't recognize these as kernel packages that
should be installonly.
The yum config is stock FC5T1.

Yes, and therefore, I can't use my privous installations anymore.
And I have no idea, how to convert the ext3 back.
I have read already bug #174618, but they assume a kernel patch for
FC4. But as I want to use Centos4 and don't believe RedHat will corporate
such a patch into their Kernels.

Kernel-2.6.15-1.1863_FC5 and udev-078-4, kernel oopses.
by Kimmo Koivisto
Hello
I have FC5t2 (updated from t1 with yum) and I have problems booting with
kernel-2.6.15-1.1863_FC5. I cannot boot, kernel oopses. I recorded it with
serial console, see attached file.
I don't have problems with kernel-2.6.15-1.1826.2.9_FC5.
Any ideas?

SELINUX file contexts FUBARed in fresh install?
by Andy Burns
Spent a few hours wiping and reinstalling my test box this weekend to
check for improvement/eradication of old bugs ...
I left my local mirror at 2006-01-20 rather than bring it right up to
date first (to avoid the udev/hotplug dependency issues)
Is it just me or is SELINUX setting leaving a freshly installed system
with knackered security contexts?
/etc/resolv.conf unwritable by dhclient (this already in BZ#178465 and a
restorecon fixes it)
but I find that firefox won't start and restorecon won't help it either,
so I logged BZ#178608, similar for thunderbird and dosbox
Booting with selinux=0 lets all the above run OK, is this a known rough
version? or does all this warrant a new BZ for selinux?
Shame rawhide doesn't seem to be in a good state for testing this
weekend, but I know everybody needs sleep sometime :-)

I have to throw in my 2 cents worth...
Personally I _do_ want to keep seeing an 'everything' option.
On my development machine, I want to be able to _easily_ install everything
so that a) i've got it all already, just in case I find I need it in an
emergency, b) I can peruse the stuff at my leisure ('apropos' is your
friend).
to learn about all my options (I.e. yesterday I accidentally learned
about software to manage files on my Motorola cell phone. To bad its not
in the 'everything' package. :-) )
On production machine I am very selective about what gets installed
so I would never install 'everything' there.
Choice is good!

It started happening after yesterdays updates

The gnome-power-preferances tool when run from system

I dont remember seeing either updated yesterday.

For testers of Fedora Core test releases. If you would like to discuss
experiences using Fedora Core TEST releases, this is the list for you.
Yes, its the Fedora test list, mplayer is not in fedora core or extras.

Shared User Accounts under KDE/GNOME FC4 and/or FC5 Test2
by Ernest L. Williams Jr.
Hi All,
Has anyone successfully used shared user accounts under KDE or GNOME?
If so, how did you do it?
What I have is NFS/NIS client Fedora workstations with a shared user
account located on centralized file server.
So each workstation login ends up pointing to the same home directory on
the single NFS server. Am I asking for trouble?
Thanks,
Ernesto

FC5T2 and ndiswrapper
by Neal Becker
You'll be happy to know, that ndiswrapper is working for me on the latest
kernel. I used the ndiswrapper cvs. It has a patch for 2.6.16.
Unfortunately, the current kernel claims to be 2.6.15, so I just modified
the patch slightly.
I do have 1 question about ndiswrapper and NetworkManager. When I boot,
nothing is loading ndiswrapper, and hence the wireless IF (wlan0) is
missing.
What is the suggested way to get the kernel mod loaded at boot? I would
really expect an entry /etc/init.d/ndiswrapper.
