System Settings=>Network rant
by Timothy Murphy
I want to be able to use my laptop easily in 2 places - home and work.
I imagine this is a very common wish.
I'm baffled by the enormous problem Fedora seems to be making of this.
There seem to be 3 different applications which deal with the issue:
1. The System Settings->Network GUI which apparently comes with Fedora
2. NetApplet
3 NetworkManager
I have had prblems with all three.
As I said, I'm baffled by this, as the issue seems to me almost trivial.
I have two tiny shell scripts which do the job OK for me,
so it can hardly require brain surgery.
But I'd like touse a standard system if there is one that works.
The problems I've encountered:
1. Changes to one profile affect other profiles
2. I tried compiling this, but it did not function at all - probably my fault
3. Seemed only to work with dhcp, which I don't use at home.

Laptop memory card readers in Linux ?
by Kim Lux
Does anyone know how to set up/where to get a driver for the memory card
readers on a laptop ?
/sbin/lspci:
<snip>
FLASH memory: ENE Technology Inc CB710 Memory Card Reader Controller
<snip>
This is the one that is on a HP ZD7000 laptop. People have emailed ENE,
but we haven't heard anything back yet.

latest udev issue
by Terry Polzin
The latest udev update seems to allow only root access to /media/usbdisk.
Although a mortal user can mount the device. Even an ls -l to the mounted dev
fails for the mortal user.

Hello,
I'm migrating from redhat 9 to Fedora core3 test3
All is perfect .....but when I try to make a backup of my fedora disk (or
the / partition)
with Norton Ghost 2003 I always get the same error :
read sector failure
result =1
drive =1
sectors : 2071692247 to 2071692255
I tried with another disk and got the same error message.
My mother board : assus P4-P800.
No problem with mandrake 10 on the same disk.
Can you help me ?
Thanks in advance.

kernel, K3b: poor CDROM burning from usb_storage device
by Kim Lux
Try as I might, I can't get k3b to burn data that resides on a USB
storage device on the fly. (ie a USB connected IDE hard drive)
I attain read speeds of 25MB/sec with this device when copying files
from the USB storage device. The CPU overhead associated with such
copies is about 3% on my machine.
Also K3B is exhibiting poor burning performance even when burning from
an image on the internal hard drive. The CDROMs are rated at 16x
burning. I could only burn them at 8x without experiencing a buffer
underflow.
I burnt the same CDROMs at 16 or 24x last week with a different
kernel.
I'm running 2.6.9-1.649 smp today.

hotplug to insert options like iocharset/codepage for Removable USB HD
by John Lin
I got a 80GB Removable USB HD and on systems without udev and hotplug,
I got /etc/fstab line below:
/udev/sda /mnt/sda auto
iocharset=cp950,codepage=950 0 0
With FC3t3, I am trying to get hotplug system to automatically insert
iocharset=cp950,codepage=950 option when device is plugged in. How do
I do that? I am not familiar with hotplug system. Where is the best
place to insert this option?
Thank you in advanced!

Some issues with Fedora Installation
by Peter Leif Rasmussen (PLR)
I am new to this list, and I don't know if this has been covered, but I can't see where to find any archives.
I have had some issues with installing Fedora on an IBM T30 laptop and they still seem to be present in the current Core 3.
1.The IBM T30 has its own hibernation functionality in the BIOS and wants to use a specific type partition for that. Why is the Fedora installer insisting on only recognising its very limited set of partition types during installation? If it doesn't recognize a partition why can't it just leave it alone?
2.If I choose to not have the hibernation partition formatted the installer will let me continue till the end, but then not let me finish anyway. And I have only _one_ option, ie. to reboot and start all over. Not even to go back and repair whatever the installer is unhappy about!?
If these issues have already been discussed, please let me know if there is a way I can see what was said, and perhaps if they are in the queue to be resolved.
Thank you,
Peter

FC3 RC3 - Networked LPD server printing still not working.
by Gerry Tool
I have just done a fresh install of FC3, Release Candidate 3. Printing
to a networked LPD server still will not work. This is a bug (#133064)
that is assigned to the kernel. Telnet to the print server fails, but
ping succeeds. FC2 telnets fine to the print server.
