Fedora 3 Test, support for 3Com 3c920 ??
by Bart Jans
Hello All,
I have an Asus Pundit -R with a 3Com 3c920B ethernet card inside. I tried Fedora Core 2, but it did not support my 3Com 3c920 card...
I looked for an answer to solve this annoying problem, but I couldn't find anything usefull to me, because I'm a total newbie and I don't understand anything about patching or upgrading ... .
I would like to know if the new Test Fedora Core 3 supports the 3Com ethernet card without any patching or what so ever ?
My goal is to install MythTV on the Asus Pundit and connect it to my TV, but this is quite hopeless at the moment because I can't connect to the internet ...
Please help !

Re: FC3rc5 : how to regen 2.6.9-1.649 kernel tree from kernel-2.6.9-1.649.src.rpm

Although this is implied in your remark, I think it might be helpful to
state it explicitly:
Because kernel headers define interfaces, etc that are *private* to the
kernel and kernel modules. To get the interfaces that are safe and
published and *public* for user space programs the headers in
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include
are the ones to be used for user space programs.
Even open source programs need some privacy :-)

run "mount" with no-user-root en get RW rights
by Bites
Hello.
I have a problem.
By my station I need to run the command "mount" to access folders "smbfs" in a server.
$ mount -t smbfs -o username=sambauser //server/sambauser /home/localuser/H
If I run like "root", it works. While "root" I have full access RW in the mounted folder.
But like a "localuser" I have problems: I don't have RW access if mounted using "root".
Ok... the solution would be to run the command "mount" like "localuser".
I found in documentation the command "sudo". I wrote the configurations. Now, the "localuser" can run the command with success.
$ sudo mount -t smbfs -o username=usuariosamba //servidor/usuariosamba /home/usuariolocal/H
The problem is: "sudo" run the commando like "root". And the problem above continues.
Question: how can I run the command "mount", without use the "fstab" file, like a "localuser", with RW rights on the folder shared to "localuser"?
Thank you.

Repositories, PLEASE ????
by Kim Lux
I am still in need of the latest repository addresses, ie the ones that
people are using to update their rc5 systems. I've got the rawhide
repository on my machine and I have not seen any updates since the
beginning of week.
An ls of /etc/yum.repos.d
and then the contents of a few of those files would do nicely.
Thanks in advance.

Should Fedora rpms be signed?
by nodata
A recent scam involving fake updates to Fedora has highlighted the lack of
signed RPMs for Fedora Core.
"Red Hat has been made aware that emails are circulating that pretend to
come from the Red Hat Security Team"
[..]
"All official updates for Red Hat products are digitally signed and should
not be installed unless they are correctly signed and the signature is
verified."
-- http://www.redhat.com/security/
It's possibly that some of the people testing Fedora Core are connected to
a network of machines that they'd rather not put at risk. It might also be
possible that a user testing Fedora Core could even use the same password
as another machine connected to that network.
Perhaps some users of Fedora Core also have personal information stored on
the machine which FC is installed on.
I posted a bug. I got a reply, from Duke:
"1. fedora core is not a product, it is a project.
2. releases from rawhide are not official."

What does the list think about signed RPMs - are they unnecessary for a
community project, or are they useful?

CDROM in FC3T3: beginning to panic, fearing that cd will never work! blame hal or kernel?
by Paul Johnson
I'm getting more and more frustrated with the inability to mount cdroms
in my Dell Inspiron laptop. This was an intermittent problem in FC2, and
now with FC3 the problem happens every time. I filed a bug report in the
bugzilla, and it was assigned, but I didn't see any response yet.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=137831
In the meanwhile, I have decided to ask here for user advice.
WHen I put in a disk, the cdrom device just grinds away and
/var/log/messages shows this, repeated forever:
Nov 5 09:58:50 pols111 kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Nov 5 09:58:50 pols111 kernel: hdc: irq timeout:
error=0xd0LastFailedSense 0x0d
Nov 5 09:58:50 pols111 kernel: hdc: DMA disabled
Nov 5 09:58:50 pols111 kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete
Nov 5 09:59:09 pols111 kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Nov 5 09:59:09 pols111 kernel: hdc: irq timeout:
error=0xd0LastFailedSense 0x0d
Nov 5 09:59:09 pols111 kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete
Nov 5 09:59:15 pols111 su(pam_unix)[3293]: session closed for user root
Nov 5 09:59:28 pols111 kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Nov 5 09:59:28 pols111 kernel: hdc: irq timeout:
error=0xd0LastFailedSense 0x0d
Nov 5 09:59:28 pols111 kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete
The hardware and cd are fine, I can boot into WinXP and all is OK.
As I browse the web, I see that this cd problem has occurred to a
variety of users, and one frequent recommendation is to disable
"autorun" by removing Gnome magicdev or KDE Autostart. In FC3T3, there
is not "magicdev" anymore, but rather it is absorbed into
"gnome-volume-manager" and I am afraid I don't know how to disable it.
Even a "killall magicdev" does not help before inserting a cd.
That's why I do not think the problem I see is an automount problem. I
have gone into gconf-editor and turned off all of the cdrom automounting
options. Even if I boot into runlevel 3--without gnome or kde--I still
have the trouble when I insert a cdrom.
I am beginning to think this is a hal problem, since hal is the new
element. Or maybe udev.
I've been using Linux a long time and I have never run into an
insoluable problem, but this one is scaring me.
So, if you have any ideas, I will gladly try them out.

FC3rc5
by Elliot Lee
For your weekend enjoyment, please try:
http://fedora.linux.duke.edu/FC3-rc/3/
http://sunsite.mff.cuni.cz/OS/Linux/Dist/Fedora.RC/3/
ftp://sunsite.mff.cuni.cz/OS/Linux/Dist/Fedora.RC/3/
rsync://sunsite.mff.cuni.cz/ftp/OS/Linux/Dist/Fedora.RC/3/
http://testing.fedora.redhat.com/tree/ (still syncing, should be ready by 8pm EDT Oct 29.)
This is likely to be the last FC3 release candidate, so please give it all
the loving attention you possibly can. It does have fixes for some of the
more serious issues reported here - your efforts are having results. When
testing FC3rc5, things that could use extra-special attention are upgrades
and the kernel. Please make sure to file any showstopper bugs (data loss
or corruption, major install/upgrade failures) in bugzilla and bring the
bug #'s to our attention.
In respond to all the queries about "why are the .iso timestamps
changing", it's because I'm putting the latest RC in the same location as
the older ones, so the files do change.
Thanks y'all!

Mounting ntfs... possible rw
by Harry Putnam
Group,
Can anyone here report the state of things with the experimental
kernel code for mounting ntfs and making it read/write?
Any problems just mounting/viewing?
Any tragedies or other reports of write?

Network manager restart..
by Brian Anderson
I can make my network manager die fairly consitently, by disconnecting
and reconnecting my wired ethernet in order to force the network manager
to switch to my internal wireless card and back. The desktop icon
disappears and "service NetworkManger status" reports the service is
dead. I restart it and it seems to start fine with "service
NetworkManger status" reporting the service alive. However, I can't get
the desktop icon back. What's the best way to do that?

Evolution 2.0.2 Doesn't Display Certain Messages
by Christopher A. Williams
I don't know if this is a reported bug or not, but EV 2.0.2 in FC3T3
seems to randomly fail displaying certain HTML formatted messages. Now I
know some of you will think this may not be necessarily bad <grin>, but
think of it at it appears to not be working as designed or intended.
In particular, HTML formatted messages which use CSS tags seem to really
have a difficult time. Once one message fails, other HTML messages - and
sometimes even plain text messages - randomly can not be displayed.
Sometimes this only happens when using the preview window. Opening the
message in its own window will then sometimes work - but other times the
message will not display no matter what you do. I can't find any pattern
to this behavior. Note that these messages *do* display properly and
consistently in other mail clients like Mozilla Thunderbird.
If nobody has reported this, I will happily file as a bug, but I thought
I would check here first to make sure nobody has.
Cheers,
Chris
