rubygem-rack version 1.1 should allow for usage with Sinatra, Padrino, Merb, many versions of Rails, and more.
afair, rack 1.1 only works with Rails 2.3.8, (or maybe > 2.3.6), how does it fit to the current rails version in epel?
It may not. The current version of rails in epel is fairly old at this point (I think it's pre rack days). I did say many versions of rails (not all) :)
I use mostly sinatra these days which where I've done a majority of my testing. At my dayjob we also have a newer rails stack for EL5 because the 2.2 version was not cutting it for us.
I've actually really wanted to move rails in EPEL5 for a while, but that might be too big of change, (read API breakage) unless there are some serious security reasons to do so.
