rpm AutoRequires/AutoProvides and dsos not in linker path, do we care ?
by Caolán McNamara
So, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=502226 was logged a
while ago against OOo for the rpms "improperly" providing and
requiring .sos that are not in the linker path, but instead in OOo's own
subdirs.
The concern is that the autorequires/provides operate in a flat
namespace and that eventually there'll be some conflation where
something linking to /usr/lib/foo.so will force sucking in a package
that provides /usr/lib/package/plugins/foo.so instead
Clearly this isn't specific to OOo, e.g. as a random example
$ rpm -q --provides gedit|grep spell
libspell.so
$ rpm -ql gedit | grep libspell.so
/usr/lib/gedit-2/plugins/libspell.so
and probably thousands of others.
So,
a) do we care ?
b) if we care do we want to
b.1) make every package that has some shared libraries in it that are
not in the default linker path make manual filters to exclude the
provides/requires ? (oh, the pain)
b.2) extend the autorequires/autoprovides in some (handwaves) way to
better indicate the desired match

XInput.h has moved to libXi
by Peter Hutterer
Just a notice, if your package requires XInput.h to build, you will need to
change the BuildRequires from xorg-x11-proto-devel to libXi. The header file
has moved there.
Reason: it's the library header file and shouldn't have been in the proto
package in the first place (this applies to upstream as well of course).
This applies to Rawhide only, not F11.
Cheers,
Peter

Pulseaudio question...
by Nathanael D. Noblet
At the risk of bringing up a touchy subject, I have a couple pulseaudio
questions. Just wondering if the behaviour I am experiencing is a bug or
intended behaviour. Fedora 11 recently installed fully up to date as of now.
I've opened a movie in totem, the main volume level is somewhere in the
range of 70%, however totem is at about 4%. The movie is too quiet so
I've upped the volume in totem to 19%. The main volume is now 84%. All
fine and good. However if I modify the main volume at all (up or down),
the main volume resets to whatever the main volume was before I changed
totem's volume. If I in this case bring the main volume up to 84% again,
totem is at the 19% I set it to...
Is this expected behaviour?

On the commits mailing list, instead of the author name at the From

What I HATE about F11
by Charles Butterfield
Okay, so I mostly love Fedora. However, here are 4 things that got by
blood really, really boiling, so I thought I'd share my emotions. They
are mostly policy issues, where I think you have gotten it very very
wrong.
Just installed F11 64 bit, here are the things I hate about it in the
first 30 minutes (of course there are a lot of things I like too, but
they work, these don't). No doubt more will crop up.
* Root gdm login - gets harder every release - SHAME ON YOU root
nazis!
* Samba (outbound) browsing requires firewall mods
* Jamming SELinux enforcing mode with no query during install
And a bug:
* My "supported" NVIDIA card (Quadro NVS 295) is not detected -
okay this may not be due to overt, mulish arrogance, but I did check the
supported card list and it is really annoying.
The first 3 items are just freaking absurd and represent some sort of
political agenda combined with astonishing arrogance.
Is a graphical root login dangerous -- of course! So are a lot of
things, which have obvious enable/disable controls. Was this this
discussed in the release note? - NO. Should it be inhibited by an
ever-increasing set of obscure work-arounds (in this case an new file to
edit in F11)? Of course not. (Well as was pointed out to me in thread
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=223793 this is
discussed... but in non-highlighted text at the end of the boring last
bullet suggesting you "save and close").
And why on earth show the stupid "Windows Network" if it doesn't work --
just gives an obscure error message "Failed to retrieve share list from
server". If you install the client, the reasonable man would open the
ports, OR provide a cluefull error message.
SELinux - enforcing???? So all the bugs are worked out? I think not.
Regards
-- Charlie Butterfield
P.S. Here is a bit more context:
Bob -- Thanks for the tip, I did NOT realize the developers didn't scan
the forums. I have been using Fedora since FC2 (I think), and overall
think its great, esp as a bleeding edge incubator for RHEL/CentOS. BUT
there are some annoying trends occurring that finally pushed me over
rant/no-rant threshold.
Dan -- I like all manner of stuff, but what caused me to just wipe my
CentOS 5.3 root partition and replace it with F11 was a desire to get
the relatively new GNOME gvfs stuff -- so I can manipulate remote
windows shares with any tool, not just GnomeVFS aware tools.
On a higher level I am amazed and impressed by the creative outpouring
from the various Open Source communities, although it is also a stark
reminder of the fact that programmers hate, hate, hate documentation :-)

Re: PolicyKit and malware, was: What I HATE about F11

Hi,
(once again, with manually adding f-d-l to the To field, since the
fedora-devel-list mailman setup is broken)

Your attitude is really annoying. Try reading my message again. And,
gee, maybe try googling for "security in depth" or "layered security".

autodownloader, live spins and packaging
by Bruno Wolff III
I am the maintainer of the Live Games Spin and am looking for feedback
on dealing with games (though this could apply to other types of packages
as well) that have some of their content obtained using autodownloader.
Currently I don't want to include games that can only be played using
downloaded content on the Live Games Spin. I don't think that gives
a good experience using the Live Games Spin as a demo (which is what
I think its focus should be). And space is tight right now so cutting things
that used the auotdownloader first was a useful way to get down to size.
However, it's possible that lzma compression of live images might be available
for F12, which would allow me to add back some game packages that had to
be cut because of space. While I still wouldn't want to include games that
were only playable using autodownloader, there are some packages that have
some data included in Fedora and other data that gets downloaded. So that
you can play some of the games without having to download data, but not
all of them. For example the quake3 package is needed for some games in
Fedora, but it makes menu items for some games that are only playable with
large downloads.
For the games spin, I'd like to be able to either not show menu items for
the games that need downloaded data or have a way to not include the
game stubs that need downloaded data to play. I don't believe the first
option is allowed for spins. So I am thinking of filing RFEs against
packages this applies to, to split out the autodownloader stuff into a
separate rpm that is optional. Does this sound reasonable? If so, is this
something that should be recommended in a packaging guideline?
