Thunderbird/Evolution quirks
by Michael Cronenworth
My random thought for today:
Thunderbird is listed under the "Internet" sub-menu. Evolution is listed
under the "Office" sub-menu. Why are they in different places?
Ah...
mozilla-thunderbird.desktop:
Categories=Email;Network;
evolution.desktop:
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Office;Email;Calendar;ContactManagement;X-Red-Hat-Base;
As bloated as Evolution is, does it need 7 different categories?

Fedora 11 wireless-tools yum erase?
by Frank Murphy
Why does yum erase wireless-tools want to:
Removing for dependencies:
anaconda
firstboot
rhpl
system-config-(boot,date,date-docs,firewall,
firewall-tui,keyboard,kickstart,language,lvm,
network,network-tui,rootpassword,users,users-docs)
This is a wired desktop, that has absolutely no need for wireless
or indeed wpa-supplicant which want to remove:
NetworkManager
NetworkManager-gnome
anaconda
system-config-kickstart
I know --nodeps could be used, or indeed use "network service"
but currently have no problems with NM
Bu how?, are they tied into so much.

Hallo,
I have tried to build blender on the devel branch with mock.
Unfortunately, I have got the following output:

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: package-cleanup --problems
package-cleanup --dupes
rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
The program package-cleanup is found in the yum-utils package.
It may be nice, if anyone have a hint to solve this issue.

Plase switch to intel-2.8 prerelease
by Clemens Eisserer
Hi,
It would be great to see rawhide switching from intel-2.7.0 to 2.8pre soon.
After the switch to xorg-server-1.6.99 the old intel-driver only works
with EXA, UXA+KMS is broken, and I miss a bunch of fixes in 2.7 that
are in 2.8.
Thanks, Clemens

X11 on intel (rawhide)
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
Following the last official rawhide update (21st was it?), my desktop
has been hosed.
I've updated to the latest xorg-server and intel drivers (plus a few
others) as well as gdm and anything else I can think off. All updates
have been pulled from koji between 4pm and 10.30pm (UK, GMT)
All I'm now getting is gdm failing to start (it shows a box where the
usernames are normally, but it's blank, then restarts X).
When I look at the logs, I'm seeing the following at the bottom
(xorg.0.log)
Backtrace

Any ideas on what can be causing gdm/x to behave like this and more
over, how do I fix it?

topics to discuss:
* RPM Macros [1] for packaging
* critical path packages [2] - does it affect us? should it? how?
* any issues to bring up in the FESCo meeting?
* sharing brand with upstream
* Fedora 12 KDE 4.3 feature page
= Summary =
Kevin_Kofler elected to FESCo, any issues to bring up in the FESCo meeting?
* congratulations Kevin!
* next FESCo meeting is on Friday, if you have any issues to bring up in the
FESCo meeting, contact Kevin
RPM Macros for packaging
* MathStuf to take it to mailing list for further discussion
* we should have macros for the common directories, any advantage to have
macros for all stuff?
* it can help cleanup SPEC files
* do we need all KDE 3 macros?
critical path packages - does it affect us? should it? how?
* do we want to be on the list of critical packages?
o if yes - which packages should be on the list?
o if not - are we going to be treated as second citizens?
* rdieter is releng -> signoff group, so he could be our insider to check
critical updates affecting KDEs
* we don't have QA
o SMParrish is triager
o we need QA volunteer
o we have to define QA process
+ we need testing plan
+ basic QA is "try to use the desktop and report any breakage you
notice"
+ we need some targets like "does WPA in kde-plasma-nm work?" for a kde-
plasma-nm update etc.
o rdieter will prepare concept
sharing brand with upstream
* jreznik contacted pinheiro (upstream) for his idea
* fedora design team feels more negative on this
* we'd like to try, we need more communication between upstream and our design
team
* jreznik to continue as liason between fedora-art team and upsream kde art
folks in "sharing branding"
Fedora 12 KDE 4.3 feature page
* helps the marketing/qa machine
* what we should promote for F12
o ltinkl is working on Device Kit Solid Backend
o jreznik is working on Policy Kit 1
* Kevin_Kofler pointed out concerns about Device Kit state
Gran Canaria Desktop Summit [3]
* jreznik is attending GCDS, if you have something for upstream, contact him
Meeting bot
* was it useful? ;-)
= Tasks =
1. MathStuf to take macros proposal to mailing lists for further discussion
2. rdieter prepare concept for KDE QA
3. jreznik to continue as liason between fedora-art team and upsream kde art

bodhi - testing back to pending?
by Bill McGonigle
Hi, all,
I couldn't figure this out from the wiki:
Do updates in -testing go back to pending if they're not pushed to
stable in some amount of time?
I'd like to see a tor security update make it to -updates. The
package's page:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/F10/FEDORA-2009-1522
indicates that it was pushed to -testing shortly after being submitted,
but it's not there now, and bodhi never updated Bugzilla with a notice
that it had been pushed to testing:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=499438
Additionally, the package maintainer isn't able to get the bodhi client
to work, so what is the right way to ask somebody to push it (back?)
over to testing? If that's done, I think testers can give it the karma
it needs to get out.
Thanks,
-Bill

Re: Changing the default 32-bit x86 arch for Fedora 12 (#2)
by Adam Miller
+1 For the i686 with atom optimizations. This seems like a solid suggestion
and Gregory's argument seems logical.

Fedora x86_64 is the solution for good performance for those systems.
The difference between 32bit mode and 64bit mode dwarfs all the little
compiler tweaks we could discuss.
Optimizing for atom makes sense because it's the most modern hardware
which doesn't have a higher performing alternative than the 32bit
build.
Moreover, as an in-order core it atom should gain more from
optimization than most cpus and generally optimizations for atom are
harmless or even beneficial for other CPUs, while optimization for
highly out of order CPUs can be devastating for in-order cores. As you
can see in Bill's post upthread optimizing for atom is mildly
beneficial even to P4.
Amusingly, on my own code at least -mtune=atom produces significantly
faster code than -mtune=geode on my geode LX.
P4 is pretty much a lost cause. The move to i686 from i586 itself will
make P4 slower, while helping most everything else by about the same
margin that it hurt p4. Optimizing for P4 will probably hurt
everything, certainly atom.
Atom systems are frequently battery powered, so improvements there can
also to increased battery life. P4, OTOH, already requires a locally
installed atomic power plant so energy isn't an issue there.
