Fedora 11 Alpha Media Test Defaults
by Jerry Williams
Do we really want the default to be test the media instead of skip?
I test my media the first time I get it and that it is unless I think it has
been scratched or something is wrong with it.
So can we make the default to be skip?
Also I do a lot of installs on virtual boxes, can we have the option to not
eject the media? Or be asked it we want to eject the media?
I hate the fact that I have to reboot the box because it ejects the media
and that seems to be the only way to find it again.
And if the media is a DVD why would I want to eject it anyway?

Fedora tested in c't: grub missing feature
by Christoph Höger
Hi,
fedora has recently been tested (again) and compared against other
distributions (Ubuntu and OpenSUSE) by c't, a german IT magazine from
the heise publishing house.
Among other criticisms one thing was really annoying: When a user
installs fedora on a machine with windows installed (common use case) it
detects that installation and offers to add it to grub. But installing
fedora on a box with an already present linux distro installation will
yield that installation removed from grub.
I understand that the bootloader is a part of the distro and its
configuration gets changed e.g. during kernel updates, but is there
really only the answer to remove one distribution completely?
Do we really want to support Windows as second OS more than OpenSUSE or
Ubuntu (or CentOS, or Debian, or Gentoo, or ........)
At least the anaconda team should consider printing a warning about one
OS going to "be lost" during install and how to recover.
Any thoughts on that?

How to reduce cached memory?
by Joshua C.
I have kde 4.2 and f9. After 2+ hours on my computer it has about
1,4GB cached memory. I don't see him releasing this memory after time.
I know it comes from the apps being open but it seems the kernel
"never" releases the memory after the app terminates. How to make the
kernel free this memory? I've seen similar cases with kde 3.5.10 and
f8 and f7. I know kde eats memory but this is too much. Who caches so
much of it? Why?
The mashine has 2,6 GB RAM (still x86) and 512mb swap which is rarely
used (~ 50mb at most) and combined cached + app memory totals about 2
gb.

Shouldn't users / admins be modifying corresponding fdi files in
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/ rather than editing the packaged versions in
%{_datadir}? And if they do edit files in %{_datadir}, isn't it their
problem if updates overwrite their changes? :)
Personally, I've had customizations for my synaptics touchpad in
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-synaptics.fdi through numerous updates.

Help request about hinting dev (Liberation Fonts).
by Caius Carlos CHANCE
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi,
I am currently maintaining Liberation Fonts project. As most of the bugs
that I received were in regard to hinting defects, I would like to ask
about info of font hinting.
As you might heard of, Liberation Fonts were shipped from commercial
fonts manufacturer, Ascender. The deliverable is in .TTF format. The
files were converted into .SFD format and hosted as open source project
on fedorahosted.org.
Unfortunately, along the project runs, there are bug reports of hinting
problem on certain characters. This has raised me the following needs of
info/knowledge:
- - Is there anyone in fedora community who could provide helpful info on
how to manage a high quality hinting?
- - Which free hinting tools are available other than fontforge?
- - Where could I find resources of hinting instructions? Precisely, full
specs of hinting instructions, such as parameter explanation of all
hinting instructions
- - If a CVT table has no comments on each value, do I have to do reverse
engineering and how should I begin?
As Mailhot's previous emails on new font packaging guidelines, he often
let us refer to Dejavu Fonts. I am wondering if I could catch up any of
Dejavu devs who don't mind kindly provide valuable info of hinting?
Thank you very much for reading.
Best Regards,
kaio

Fedora EOL Security Updates
by Scott Williams
Good evening list,
I run the #Fedora-EOL channel and would like to get a group together
to work on backporting only security patches to EOL versions. It will
be based on Production 3 of the Red Hat Enterprise life cycle
(http://www.redhat.com/security/updates/errata/). To summarize it,
only security patches with no intent to update functionality or add
hardware support for older versions. Updates would likely come in
light monthly spurts, similar to EPEL's release cycle.
I know this has been talked about in length here about whether or not
this should be done, but I'm interested in organizing community
members who are interested to start working on this.
We would need two things to get started:
#1 Hosting. I have time but not money. We would need to have a
common place to collaborate on work and a place for repos.
#2 Contributors. Anyone who is interested in helping, even if they
don't have much time to spare.
I'm usually around in #Fedora-EOL. If I'm idling, feel free to leave
me a message, and I'll get back in contact with you as soon as I can.
Thanks,
Scott (vwbusguy)

f10, gui login spawns multiple X sessions, fails
by Carl Byington
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I have a F10 system that has never quite worked properly. Dell inspiron
530 desktop with builtin intel graphics, but we added an nvidia card,
and get the same behavior.
Case 1 fails: /etc/inittab set to run level 5. The initial login screen
comes up. Login as a user, and the screen goes black. SSH into the box,
and we see multiple copies of X running on many ttyN devices.
Case 2 works: /etc/inittab set to run level 3. After booting, from a
root ssh session from another machine, 'telinit 5'. The initial login
screen comes up, and user mode logins work nicely.
Any suggestions for debugging this?

Re: FEL's commitment lineup

Fedora (the distribution) is the product of the Fedora Project. We all
know this. FESCo looks after the welfare of the contributing members
and the fedora packages.
I am one of the contributing members and at the same time I look after
the welfare of the opensource EDA community(not only packages) which
are outside Fedora. The number of FEL users is directly proportional
to the health of this opensource EDA community. The health of this
opensource EDA community depends on the following items:
- user base - worldwide
- EDA developer base with hardware knowledge - more than 20 different
upstream projects
- Providers, Methodologies and design flows maintainers - FEL
At this point we are outside the packaging environment and more EDA
community development. However both are inter-related and under the
name of Fedora Electronic Lab I'm trying to keep the balance.
FEL users will develop hardware. One of Fedora's ground rules is about
opensource and spreading the word. So with FEL, I'm trying to promote
open hardware by spreading the word. However it would be nice to
develop openhardware with opensource EDA software.
It is my/FEL task to provide such tools that can make it possible and
needs the technical demands.
I would appreciate that steering committee should have the above notes
in mind. I have closed the OVM package review request and if we have
OVM support in the future, I'll reopen the bug. I'm sorry to say that
the "doesn't provide OS user experience" is lame as an argument for
FEL applications as it downgrades "hardware design user experience" on
Fedora. Something FEL is fighting since more than 3 years now.
My first email on the thread "Fedora Project, give me 20 Million Euros
or Free Software" was to sync the Fedora Project with information
about what is being done with respect to EDA and decisions/arguments
should be taken wisely as most of the time it is like a domino effect
on the work done in the past. Thereby hardware designers for
openhardware will not have the tools to make the easy switch.
Though, many will say FEL's user base is minority. I would rather
point to what can be achieved. Have a brief look at this document and
pictures.
http://www-vlsi.stanford.edu/~jsolomon/dac_2001/chipmap.pdf (first
doc, I found on google)
High end hardware design is possible. Our ambassadors around the world
will be proud to say: you can execute the whole design flow under
fedora.
Kind regards,
Chitlesh
