Loopback mounting the root filesystem using nash
by David P. Quigley
Hello,
I've been working on trying to build a really tiny SELinux enabled
version of fedora and I am getting stuck with something things in nash.
I created a file called rootfs.img using the following commands:
dd if=/dev/zero of=rootfs.img count=1 bs=64MB
mke2fs -j -F -i 1024 rootfs.img
I then mounted it as a loopback fs and proceeded to copy the appropriate
filesystem structure and what I need to get the system running with
busybox into it.
I ran into a problem when I tried to use this from an initrd.
I first tried to losetup the file onto /dev/loop0 but kept getting loop:
can't get info on device /dev/loop0: No such device or address. I
thought it was because I was missing the loop device so I created it
with mknod /dev/loop0 b 7 0 (as it is on my actual fedora box) but this
didn't help.
The next thing I tried was to not bother with this and just use the -o
loop option to mount but this fails with the error "mount: error
mounting /rootfs.img on /sysroot as ext3: Block device required"
I started by unpacking the initrd that is for the kernel that I am
currently running so at some point it worked. I have pasted the modified
init script that I am using in hopes that someone can help me figure out
what I am doing wrong.

Heya,
It all went a bit quick, and the new bluez 4.x utilities and libraries
have landed in rawhide. This means that a number of applications needed
to be rebuilt.
If your application was using the bluetooth library itself, there are
very few changes to the underlying API, only if you used to parse SDP
records by hand. See this example patch:
http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewvc/rpms/obex-data-server/devel/obex-data...
For applications that used the D-Bus API, well, you'll need to update
them to use the new API. Only apps I know that do that are apps I
maintain, so I wouldn't worry about it :)
Many thanks to the maintainers who already did their own rebuilds in
meantime.
Here's the list of rebuilds I made. Let me know if I forgot anything.
* Rebuilt apps:
pilot-link
obex-data-server
gnome-vfs2-obexftp
libbtctl
libwiimote

non-responsive maintainer 'misa': mx and pyOpenSSL packages up for adoption
by Matt Domsch
I would like to request a short-circuit of the Non-responsive
Maintainer process, for Mihai Ibanescu, FAS account 'misa', formerly a
Red Hat employee.
misa owns two packages, mx and pyOpenSSL. mx has not been touched by
misa since March 2005, and pyOpenSSL since November 2005; only the
slightest maintenance has been performed on them since this time by
rel-eng members to enable them to keep building. mx has a FTBFS bug
against it (#434325), and is overdue for a major version update from
2.0.6 -> 3.1.1. Both packages are closed to commits from the
'packager' group.
mx has a long list of packages which depend on it, noted below, so I
don't want to see it removed from the distribution.
I have a patch to fix the mx FTBFS bug which I will apply as soon as
permissions in pkgdb allow, but would like to see these orphaned and
put up for adoption by a loving packager.
Thanks,
Matt

NetworkworkManger and network based filesystem /usr
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
As you know I've started as the newest member of the anaconda team this
September. The first thing I've been working on is iSCSI support in the Fedora
(master) branch of anaconda.
Getting anaconda into shape for iSCSI support is one, but getting the installed
system to actually work with anaconda is a different problem altogether.
The problem here is that the current default in Fedora is to *always* use
NetworkManager to configure the network interfaces.
But if you look in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d you will see:
S06cpuspeed
S07iscsid
S08iptables
S10network
S11auditd
S12rsyslog
S13iscsi
S22messagebus
S25fuse
S25netfs
S26haldaemon
S27NetworkManager
Note this is with both the old network service as well as NetworkManager
enabled which is done just to illustrate things!
What you see here is that the old network service started at priority 10, with
low priorities starting first, then at 13 iscsi got started and at 25 network
filesystems (nfs, iscsi, etc) get fsck-ed (where applicable) and then mounten.
Then at 26 hal gets started and at 27 NetworkManager.
Now here we have a problem as in the brave new world without the old network
service, when iscsi gets started and when netfs tries to mount nfs shares, the
network is not configured yet as NetworkManager hasn't been started yet.
This can probably best be fixed by moving both hal and NetworkManager earlier
and then waiting in iscsi and in netfs (for systems without iscsi but for
example nfs) for NetworkManager to complete configuring the network, I already
have a patch for the iscsi initscript todo this.
But there is a catch, hal and NetworkManager are currently under /usr which
could be on a network based fs itself. So hal and NetworkManager will need to
be moved to /bin and /lib[64], or alternatively we could declare that
installations where /usr is on a different fs then / are not supported (which
might be a good thing todo for F-10 and then move hal + NM for F-11).
Before I start filing bugs and submitting patches I would like some feedback on
this. I would like to end this mail with noting that since we've choosen to
move away from the old network scripts to an all NetworkManager based world,
that moving hal + NM earlier and to the root fs seems to be the only solution.
Regards,
Hans

Fedora 10 and translations: String freeze and repackaging
by Dimitris Glezos
A kind reminder that shipped packages for which Fedora is upstream for
are **string frozen** since the Beta freeze of September 11: no
translatable strings can be added or modified for Fedora 10. For more
information, please refer to the F10 schedule and the string freeze
policy:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ReleaseEngineering/StringFreezePolicy
Also, please note that the Fedora L10n Steering Committee has moved
the Translation Deadline to 14/10 (one week earlier). Maintainers of
the above packages need to put a reminder to issue a new build *later*
than this date and before the Development Freeze of 21/10. The closer
to the development freeze the rebuild takes place, the better for our
translators. If you have not received any translations since the last
build, a rebuild is not necessary.
For more information concerning these two translation-related dates,
please refer to:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N/Freezes
Feel free to drop an email to fedora-trans-list(a)redhat.com if you have
any questions.
Thanks.
