rescue isos for use with today's rawhide
by Jesse Keating
In anticipation of the Alpha freeze tonight, I created a couple rescue
isos with an updated dhcpv6client package. Using these rescue.isos you
can install today's rawhide. Just choose to install vs rescue, and
pick the URL method and point to your friendly rawhide mirror (or nfs
and your local mirror). Please yell and scream if you have issues with
your install (:

Headsup: new (soname changing) glew headed for devel
by Hans de Goede
Hi All,
I've prepared a new glew release (1.5.0) to push to rawhide, nothing special
really just a bugfix release, but still upstream decided to bump the version
from 1.5.0 to 1.4.0 and even though there is no ABI breakage, thus change the
soname from libGLEW.so.1.4 to libGLEW.so.1.5 causing explicit ABI breakage :(
I've considered patching things to keep the soname the same, but that would be
too ugly. Anyways since nothing special has changed, a simple rebuild should
suffice to fix all soname breakage.
The following packages are affected (note I ran the query against F-8, for some
reason it returns an empty list against devel)
sdljava-0:0.9.1-5.fc8.x86_64
openmsx-0:0.6.3-1.fc8.x86_64
amanith-0:0.3-5.fc8.x86_64
raydium-0:1.2-4.fc8.x86_64
TnL-0:070909-2.fc8.x86_64
enblend-0:3.0-6.fc8.x86_64
And I know the following 2 are using it too in devel:
ogre-1.4.6-2.fc9.x86_64
scorched3d-41.2-1.fc9.x86_64
I myself will be taking care of rebuilding:
sdljava-0:0.9.1-5.fc8.x86_64
raydium-0:1.2-4.fc8.x86_64
TnL-0:070909-2.fc8.x86_64
ogre-1.4.6-2.fc9.x86_64
scorched3d-41.2-1.fc9.x86_64
Note that due to the alpha release we're about todo I'll postpone the actual
building of the new glew till tomorrow.
Thanks & Regards,
Hans

Fedora 9 Alpha freeze tonight
by Jesse Keating
In roughly 4 hours we will snapshot the dist-f9 collection in Koji for
Fedora 9 alpha. The timing is such so that tomorrow's rawhide
(20080122) will be the same package set as the alpha. Our plan is to
test it up a bit and have a set of packages ready by Thursday/Friday.
We will be taking tag requests, but since this is Alpha, and since
rawhide will continue on unblocked we'd rather it be a pretty important
reason to do the tagging. We're mostly concentrating on being able to
install, and from there get updates.
Cheers all!

Fedora Rel-Eng Meeting Recap 2008-JAN-21
by John Poelstra
Recap and full IRC transcript found here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ReleaseEngineering/Meetings/2008-jan-21
Please make corrections and clarifications to the wiki page.
== Meeting Summary ==
* Rawhide non-blocking freeze for Alpha late tonight
* Alpha packages will NOT be signed with the testing key
1. would add several days of additional delay to alpha release
1. there is no checking at install time to verifiy signatures so it
doesn't matter anyway
* f13's plan for the day
1. get a spin done with fixed dhcp6client
1. publish the rescue.isos so that other people can test with it
1. create the freeze tag and do the intial clone over to it so that
the clone tonight will be quick

Experiment: an RPM that shows uninstalled apps in main menu
by Denis Leroy
This is an idea I've had about a year ago and gave some thought on and
off since then, but Richard Hughes has mentioned a similar idea several
times on this list as well.
The idea is to show the (large number of) applications available to
Fedora users through yum, but instead of a linear list displayed in
pirut for example, show them directly in the main menu: that way the
available apps are already categorized in a familiar way, and you can
see the application icons and short descriptions through the menu tooltip.
For kicks and giggles, I hacked up a proof-of-concept RPM here for F-8 :
http://www.poolshark.org/src/fedora-apps-0.1-1.fc8.i386.rpm
After installation, you'll have to restart the gnome-panel with a quick
'killall gnome-panel'. The rpm is 5 MB, which is not bad for almost 1000
apps (remember we're only talking about GUI apps here, i.e. apps that
install a desktop file).
Screenshots:
http://www.poolshark.org/apps1.png
The RPM comes with a 'fedora-apps-update' binary that updates the
symlinks based on the apps already installed (so that an installed
application doesn't show up on the uninstalled list).
What command should this menu entries run ? i was hoping there would be
a simple 'pirut --install foo' or 'pup --install foo' option, but
apparently there isn't.
Comments ?

network manager command-line control?
by Matthew Miller
I want to make sure I'm not missing something before I file an RFE. I'd like
to be able to enable/disable wireless (or wired, for that matter) networking
from scripts. The nm-tool program seems like the logical place for this
functionality, but it doesn't appear to actually have it at this point.
Specifically, my laptop generates a custom Sony ACPI button event when the
wireless antenna is switched on or off -- I'd like to automatically enable
or disable wireless networking correspondingly. Is there an easy way to do
this that I'm just not seeing? Thanks.
(Also, is there a way to supress the pop-up messages about changes in
connections status? I find them more obtrusive and distracting than
helpful.)
