preload
by Marc Wiriadisastra
Those people running preload can we get some benchmarks to see whether
there is a benefit and if so how much of a benefit there is.
I ask this because I got a post on the from Rahul asking whether there
was any significant benefit running preload. I personally don't have any
numbers so I'm going to try and start to benchmark the information.
Those other people running it if you could be so kind to benchmark your
system in normal every day applications and email me the results. I'll
compile them up on the wiki when I have gathered some.

ConsoleKit vs udev, ACLs getting lost
by Tim Waugh
The problem I'm trying to solve is described in bug #424331:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=424331
The background is that HPLIP uses libusb to communicate with HP USB
printers, and both the printing system (running in group 'lp') and the
current console user (or uses) need access in that way. The console
user needs this access for ink-level checking and other status functions
provided by the hp-toolbox program, and potentially for using the
in-built scanner with libsane.
When the printer is plugged in, the device node that libusb uses for it
is in /dev/bus/usb/.../... and we want it to have group read/write
access for 'lp', and user read/write access for each console user.
The intention is to have udev rules set the group ownership to 'lp', and
to grant group read/write permissions, and to have the HAL rules grant a
'rw' ACL for each console user. I originally described this approach
here:
http://cyberelk.net/tim/2007/10/04/hplip-device-permissions-with-consolekit/
It worked well, but a recent kernel update seems to have revealed a race
condition. The ACL is granted (by hal-acl-tool) before the 'MODE=...'
udev rule is applied, and this ordering messes up the ACL permissions
(either the ACL mask or the group permissions end up being restricted).
The problem boils down to this: How can I ensure that the ACL is granted
*after* the mode permissions have been set, i.e. after the udev rules
have completed, not before?

On preload
by Behdad Esfahbod
Hi all,
Ok, I read the preload thread. Most of the questions asked are answered
here:
http://behdad.org/preload.pdf
Chapters 6, 7, and 8 is what one needs to read.
Random comments:
- Yes, slows down boot. Can be "improved" by making preload less
aggressive. In fact there are different knobs to allow setting
aggressiveness at boot time and after separately. All documented in the
config file and the above document.
- Much of the slow down couldn't be avoided back in the day, but in
the next version I'm using ionice to start preload. That should improve
things.
- One major thing that I'm not happy about in preload is that it
doesn't readahead directories, nor does it readahead stat calls. And
that's where the best bang for the memory is. Read Chapter 7. That's
the advantage of SuSE preload over Fedora preload and Fedora readahead.
SuSE preload uses a static list of course.
There was a Google Summer of Code student working for Ubuntu this past
summer trying to fix these and implement block reordering. Obviously
that needs kernel patches. No idea where it got.
- There's one place that no one can argue preloading is bad: after
login screen is shown and before password entry is completed. GDM has a
setting to hookup a prefetcher into it. It's worthwhile making preload
be started then and shutdown for example 10 minutes after login. With
some tricks and dances, one can make it do really awesome things in that
idle period.
- So far preload has been idling in kind of unmaintained state, though
after Marc's interest in putting in Fedora I've now merged all the
patches I received (ionice, merging requests, sorting based on block
location, parallel fetching) and will make a new release sometime
soonish. Note that also due to a silly bug, the current version doesn't
sort request AT ALL. It's supposed to sort based on file name, but the
compare function has a typo making it a noop.
Anyway, people should read at least Chapter 7 and 8 of the PDF before
discussing further. I'll try to get that release out in the mean time
so measurements can be more meaningful.
Cheers,
behdad

Xorg radeon drivers
by Mike Chambers
Ajax,
I know there was discussion on this, or still is, but wanted to get
something clarified. Have you made up your mind on what package(s) to
put ati drivers (latest anyway) in? Cause in F8 I used to have to run
in vesa mode to get my resolutionl, but in rawhide it's using radeon and
proper resolution is being used.
X1300 Card btw, w/Proview 926 19" Flat monitor.

Virtual provides for window managers
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
System-config-display has a hard dependency on metacity while it is not
required at all in say the KDE or Xfce spin. I believe the ideal
solution would be to have add a virtual provides to all the window
managers and then depend on it from system-config-display
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=427814
What would be the best way to move ahead with this now? File individual
bug reports against each of them?

hdX vs sdX on redhat/centos 5.x with ata_piix
by Farkas Levente
hi,
on redhat 5.x and fedora 6 there are hdX and sdX while from fedora 7
(and probably from redhat 6.x) there will be only sdX. is it possible
with the latest redhat kernel-2.6.18-53.1.4.el5 to use the same libata
driver to handle all disk (ie. both pata and sata) so we've only sdX
disk devices like it's the current setup on newer fedora release. we try
to disable ide0=noprobe etc. which really disable hdX but even if the
kernel load the libata and ata_piix driver it's still not load these disks.
thanks in advance.

SELinux removed from desktop cd spin?
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
I believe that SELinux is a great linux server security hardening tool
but that has little use in desktop linux usage and it confuses
ordinary desktop users.
If it hasn't been discussed before I would like to propose that on
desktop cd spin SELinux is not installed by default, of course after
discussion and approval from you (fedora devels).
Cheers,
Valent

F8 to rawhide upgrade
by darrell pfeifer
Yesterday I did a fresh install of F8 on a new machine. Then I attempted to
upgrade it to rawhide.
I generally update by hand, doing about 4 chunks of packages to do the
upgrade. I usually start by upgrading rpm and yum.
In current rawhide, yum (or yum utils) has a dependency on a particular
python module, but it the python chunk isn't pulled in by the yum upgrade.
After upgrading yum, yum won't run any more.
I downgraded the yum packages, did the upgrade, this time with rpm and yum
going last. I was too grouchy to record the exact message.
So, the short moral, if doing an F8 to rawhide upgrade, leave rpm/yum for
the last.
