= Agenda =
* topics to discuss:
- Preparing for Fedora 9 Alpha
- Upgrade path to KDE-4.0.0 (experiences from kde-redhat)
- Compiz and KWin decorations (Compiz still uses old KWin 3 decorations)
- Dropping compiz-kde support entirely? [1]
- comps-f9.xml
* recent bugs:
- 428212: unable to mount partitions in dolphin (Update) [2]
- 378041: unable to mount removable/ntfs (Update) [3]
= Summary =
o Preparing for Fedora 9 Alpha:
- rawhide is now frozen and kde should be ready for Fedora 9 Alpha
o Upgrade path to KDE-4.0.0 (experiences from kde-redhat):
- kdebase-workspace should be installed automatically during an upgrade
(either in @kde-desktop or with Obsoletes: kdebase < 4)
- Some upgraders seems to have problems with kdelibs/kdelibs4 ->
kdelibs3/kdelibs
o Compiz and KWin decorations (Compiz still uses old KWin 3 decorations):
- Release Notes for kwin-4.0.0:
http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/KWin/4.0-release-notes#Why_not_Compiz.3F
- Compiz' kde-window-decorator is using KWin 3 API and libkdecoration will be
removed from kdebase3 soon
- kde-desktop-effects should either be removed or reworked to also include
kwin's desktop effects and compiz (with emerald)
o comps-f9.xml:
- Packages that are obsolete now: d3lphin, kdeaddons, marble, ksudoku
- Missing packages: extragear-plasma, kaider, okteta, kdegames3,
kdeaddons-atlantikdesigner
o Open discussion:
- Kubuntu is workarounding #378041 and #428212 for KDE3 with hacks.
- These patches needs to be ported to KDE4. But there is enough time until F9
to allow some time for hal to get fixed
- LukasTinkl mentioned that upstream KDE would probably never support
PolicyKit
- knetworkmanager-0.7 branch (for NetworkManager-0.7) isn't compiling yet

revisor - is this a bug or is it me?
by Valent Turkovic
I'm not sure if this is a bug so that is why I'm writing here first.
I would like to respin Fedora 8 Live CD, and I read documentation from
pungi and revisor and it seams straightforward. But this is my fist
time using it so I can't deny that the issue could be between the
keyboard and the chair :)
So these are my steps:
1. Put selinux to permissive mode
2. Launch revisor
3. after being prompted for root password I type it in
4. on first screen "show advanced options" is grayed out so I click
only thing I can - "Get Started"
5. On second screen [1] I choose "DVD Set" and "Optical Live Media"
(I choose DVD despite Fedora 8 Live is a CD and not a DVD because on
second screen it showed it needs 777MB of data and AFAIK CDs can't
store more than 700MB) and clicked "Forward"
6. on third screen [2] I left "Revisor Configuration" by default to
"/etc/revisor/revisor.conf"
for "Configuration Section to Use" I choose "f8-i386" and clicked on
apply (is apply necessary? repositories should change automatically as
you choose configuration you want), I left destination directory to
it's default "/srv/revisor/f8-i386" and I clicked forward
7. on fourth screen [3] for "Kickstart Configuration File" I choose
"/usr/share/fedora-release/livecd-fedora-desktop.ks" and I checked
these options:
use repositories configured in the kickstart file
use package manifest from kickstart data
include kickstart file on installation media
set installer to boot with kickstart by default
My intention was to recreate respin that was identical to official
one, only with never packages, that is why I didn't choose any
customization options.
then I click forward and then I came across this bug [4] and you can
see the screenshot [5]
8. after clicking all those warnings for missing files I came to fifth
screen and clicked forward
9. and again warnings about missing files [6], and after clicking the
last one respining statred.
I saw lots of messages in revisor window "stat: cannot stat `chroot':
No such file or directory" and also posted a bug [7] regarding that in
bugzilla.
10. I got another error [8] because of some conflicts :( This one I
didn't put on bugzilla.
Can you please check if I am doing something wrong or are all these
legitimate bugs and revisor is broken temporarily?
Cheers,
Valent.

Belated FUDCon Boston 2007 video postings

a few
things, but the videos were captured using dvgrab on a powerpc system, wh=

resulted in byte-swapped audio, which sounds rather HORRIFIC to the ears.=
Someone was kind enough to figure out how to fix it, but it took me forev=

get around to actually fixing and compressing the videos, but they're now=
available on torrent.fedoraproject.org.
Of course, I was dumb enough to compress them with a codec that I don't
believe is available in Fedora proper, and the A/V sync is terrible, but =
its
marginally better than nothing, I guess...

rescue mode has issues
by Chuck Anderson
I have a dual-boot system running F7 on one VolumeGroup and rawhide on
another, with two separate /boot partitions. There were a few
problems with this setup:
1. Anaconda labeled /dev/sda3 as /boot even though /dev/sda2 already
has this label.
2. The rescue image doesn't offer to mount the rawhide partition,
which is installed to an encrypted PV. Perhaps it should offer to
open encrypted volumes so it can search them for Fedora installs to
mount.
3. I did a manual cryptsetup/vgchange/mount for the rawhide install.
I needed to add entries to /etc/grub.conf and run "grub-install" to
put grub on the boot sector of /dev/sda3. My first attempt was to
chroot to /mnt/sysimage and run grub-install there:
sh-3.2# grub-install /dev/sda3
Could not find device for /boot
4. I thought the filesystem label was the problem, so I tried to
check the labels:
sh-3.2# e2label /dev/sda2
/boot
sh-3.2# e2label /dev/sda3
e2label: Filesystem has unsupported feature(s) while trying to open
/dev/sda3
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
5. Interesting. So I tried from outside the chroot. Same results:
sh-3.2# exit
exit
sh-3.2# e2label /dev/sda2
/boot
sh-3.2# e2label /dev/sda3
e2label: Filesystem has unsupported feature(s) while trying to open
/dev/sda3
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
6. I thought maybe the filesystem was corrupted, so I tried a manual
fsck:
sh-3.2# umount /mnt/sysimage/boot
sh-3.2# fsck /dev/sda3
fsck 1.40.4 (31-Dec-2007)
WARNING: couldn't open /etc/fstab: No such file or directory
e2fsck 1.40.4 (31-Dec-2007)
fsck.ext3: Filesystem has unsupported feature(s) while trying to open
/dev/sda3
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the
superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an
alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
7. Weird. I thought I'd try to do the grub-install from outside the
chroot anyway:
sh-3.2# grub-install /dev/sda3
/sbin/grub: Not found.
8. It appears that grub was moved to /usr/sbin and grub-install wasn't
updated. Symlinking fixes it:
sh-3.2# ln -s /usr/sbin/grub /sbin/grub
sh-3.2# mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/sysimage/boot
sh-3.2# grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/sysimage /dev/sda3
The file /mnt/sysimage/boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly.
Shall I file bugs on all these issues?

BIND less restrictive modes and policy
by Adam Tkac
Hi all,
I'm going to do major revision of bind's file modes. Currenly We have
many files readable only by root and I can't see any reason why keep
binaries unreadable and unexecutable by other users. Also there isn't
any reason why keep configuration private. Only this files should not
be readable by other users:
- /etc/rndc.key - who has it may control server through rndc utility
- /var/log/named.log - will have sensitive information
All other will be readable for all. Also complete /var/named/* subtree
will be writable by named (for generating core files, DDNS updates,
secondary servers, generally for easier configuration).
Has anyone arguments against such change?
Regards, Adam

Package request: MICO or OmniORB
by Benjamin Kreuter
Hi everyone --
I noticed that there aren't any C++ ORBs packages with Fedora. Although there
is a C++ binding for ORBit2, it is not package, and worse than that, it is
broken (the code it generates is not valid C++ and does not compile).
MICO and OmniORB are both working and licensed under LGPL. Perhaps we should
include one of them? MICO is stable and well known, and several books have
been written about it, so it would seem to be a good first choice. However,
OmniORB has both C++ and Python bindings, and so it might be more useful for
Fedora (although ORBit also has Python bindings, so that point may be moot).

Should vim-X11 conflict with vim-enhanced ?
by Karsten Hopp
Hello,
Till proposed in bugzilla #311061 to use alternatives in vim-enhanced and vim-X11 so that
both of them can provide /usr/bin/vim. His reasoning as that when gvim gets started as vim
(via a symlink) it opens the text mode vim with the additional benefit of xterm clipboard support.
I agree with the /usr/bin/vim stuff, but I think a better solution would be to add a conflict between
vim-X11 and vim-enhanced. vim-enhanced is only of use on systems without X11/gtk. On all other
systems vim-X11 can provide the same (and more) functionality as vim-enhanced.
