Unable to install firefox add-ons
by Gianluca Sforna
Am I the only one unable to install firefox add-ons with
firefox-1.5.0.10-5.fc6 ?
For example, trying to install this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/60/
I get: Software installation is currently disabled. Click Edit
Options... to enable it and try again.
Fact is, I never disabled it nor happen to find where I should
activate it in the options...

-----------------
* Wed Mar 21 2007 Hans de Goede <j.w.r.degoede(a)hhs.nl> 0.1.8-3
- Advanced Strategic Command (asc), the reason to package this, turns out to
use its own private copy of SDLmm. This copy contains a few additional
functions and one bug fix. These additional functions are currently not used
by asc. Still I have decided to add not only the fix but also the additional
functions to be future proof (they do not change the ABI). The asc copy also
made some eventhandler prototype changes to make the passed references const,
I've not taken over these changes as those do change the API + ABI (and they
are not needed for asc).

yum 3.1.4 and repository medata handling
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
The latest version of yum (3.1.4) in rawhide seems to be behaving rather
inconsistently when it comes to dealing with repository metadata. I am
cleaning the cache and metadata and rerunning different commands like
yum info <package> and yum update to verify.
On some instances it downloads the compressed sqlite database directly.
In other instances it downloads and parses the compressed xml file.
Sometimes it downloads and parses the compressed xml file and then
proceeds to download the compressed sqlite database too. It seems to be
occurring randomly. Is there any explanation why. I cant see any reason
for yum to redundantly download the exact same metadata is the form of
both xml file and sqlite database.
Downloading the sqlite database has the advantage that the commands are
much more faster (since it skips the "reading metadata" part) but the
sqlite database (around 2 MB) also seems to be over the double the size
of xml files (800 kb). I ran some basic benchmarks with time and Yum
3.1.4 in rawhide is much faster than yum 3.0.3 in FC6 except for the
dependency resolving portion.

Looks like something has changed in the 2.6.21.x kernels that effects
how IP_MASQUERADE is set up.
Thoughts???

Conflicting types from kernel-headers and glibc-headers
by Matthias Saou
Hi,
I'm not sure which package to blame about this problem, except at least
keepalived itself, which wants "low level" access to kernel includes.
This is the real world problem :
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=228544#c7
It doesn't happen on RHEL4 or FC6, only on Fedora development. Could
this be some kind of de-sync between defines in the headers provided by
glibc-headers and kernel-headers packages?
Even after "forcing" keepalived to not go and include headers from the
kernel-devel package, I still get errors like this :
In file included from /usr/include/net/ethernet.h:26,
from ../include/vrrp_arp.h:29,
from vrrp_arp.c:29:
/usr/include/sys/types.h:62: error: conflicting types for 'dev_t'
/usr/include/linux/types.h:13: error: previous declaration of 'dev_t'
was here
/usr/include/sys/types.h:67: error: conflicting types for 'gid_t'
/usr/include/linux/types.h:27: error: previous declaration of 'gid_t'
was here
/usr/include/sys/types.h:72: error: conflicting types for 'mode_t'
/usr/include/linux/types.h:15: error: previous declaration of 'mode_t'
was here
/usr/include/sys/types.h:77: error: conflicting types for 'nlink_t'
/usr/include/linux/types.h:16: error: previous declaration of 'nlink_t'
was here
/usr/include/sys/types.h:82: error: conflicting types for 'uid_t'
/usr/include/linux/types.h:26: error: previous declaration of 'uid_t'
was here
Should I file this as a bug? If yes, against glibc or kernel?

No shape and sync extensions in xorg?
by Dennis Jacobfeuerborn
Hi,
When I try to enable the desktop effects (ie. compiz) I get the following
output:
[dennis@nexus ~]$ desktop-effects
compiz: No sync extension
The program 'gnome-window-decorator' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
(Details: serial 426 error_code 8 request_code 72 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I checked the extensions directory, the xorg log and the xdpyinfo output
but I can't find those extensions mentioned anywhere. The window corners in
metacity aren't rounded either. Is this a known problem or should I file a bug?

too many deamons by default - F7 test 2 live cd
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
Been fiddling with a installation of Fedora 7 Test 2 from the Live CD
and it still enables way too may daemons by default. The following
deserve special mention.
Hardware specific - Bluetooth (along with hidd), cups (FC6 even had
smartcard daemon by default). Should check and enable on demand
Definitely superfluous - firstboot, livecd. Should disable after first
run completely or even remove the packages.
Extra - cpuspeed. mdmonitor, netfs, ntpd, portmap. Can't see a reason to
enable these by default.
Default? - Possibly NetworkManagerDispatcher since
NetworkManager is enabled by default
Exim should probably replaced with something like esmtp or ssmtp in the
live cd. Folks wanting to install a full blown MTA can install sendmail,
postfix or email on their own.
Comments?

disabling warn_unused_result attribute with FORTIFY_SOURCE?
by Matthew Miller
My google-fu is failing me; I can't find any documentation on this.
Apparently, building with -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 results in the
warn_unused_result attribute being added to every (? or maybe just many)
fuction. In turn, this makes many perfectly good programs spit out hundreds
of warnings. I'm not sure this is necessarily good.
Unlike other warnings, though, there doesn't seem to be a way to turn it
off. Is there one I'm missing?
I'd like to clean up all the real errors and turn on -Werror....
