Request to please enable VerifyHostKeyDNS for openssh-clients in FC7
by Paul Wouters
I just installed openssh-clients-4.5p1-2.fc7 and noticed that the option
to use SSHFP DNS records is still not enabled. From the man page:
VerifyHostKeyDNS
Specifies whether to verify the remote key using DNS and SSHFP
resource records. If this option is set to yes, the client
will implicitly trust keys that match a secure fingerprint from
DNS. Insecure fingerprints will be handled as if this option was
set to ask. If this option is set to ask, information on
fingerprint match will be displayed, but the user will still need
to confirm new host keys according to the StrictHostKeyChecking
option. The argument must be yes, no, or ask. The default
is no. Note that this option applies to protocol version 2
only.
See also VERIFYING HOST KEYS in ssh(1).
The openssh package maintainer has told me in the past he does not want
to enable this option due to the "potential harm of an extra DNS lookup".
To me that seems like a weak argument against adding more security,
especially since the sshd already does plenty of reverse dns lookups on
the client to begin with. And with proper dns configuration, even without
having an SSHFP record, the delay of one dns lookup in the ssh client is
not going to exceed 100ms.
I maintain the "sshfp" package to generate these SSHFP records for hosts
or domains based on .ssh/known_hosts or ssy-keyscan, amking it trivially
easy for anyone who has their own domain to add SSHFP records to their
domain to make sure of this additional security feature.
SSHFP records are providing real security. It gives you an additional
hint on whether or not you can trust the remote host you are connecting
to for the first time. It will add some safetey for people who just hit
"yes" now to any new fingerprint presented by the ssh client (yeah sure,
no one admits to doing it, but everyone does)
Xelerance has deployed SSHFP records for over a year now. We do not
see any problems or even experience the extra wait time using an
ssh client with VerifyHostKeyDNS enabled. It has been active on all
openswan/xelerance domains and never prevented a single ssh client from
connecting to those servers.
We would really like to see this option enabled by default. If we miss
enabling this option for FC7, we will go through at least another six
months of changing every install of FC manually to enable this in the
/etc/ssh/ssh_config file.
Note that by now, RIPE's reverse tree is secured by DNSSEC. This covers
all IP space in Europe. The first two CC:TLD's (Sweden and Bulgaria) have
also enabled DNSSEC. This provides a very strong protection for SSHFP
records, though granted this will take some resolver configurations,
which is another topic that Fedora should at some point address for the
caching-resolver package.
So, I really hope that we can enable SSHFP record lookups in the ssh
client in its default configuration file.
As a sidenote, upgrading to the test2 version, i noticed there is no
openssh-askpass package anymore. Will the upgrade from FC6 to FC7 be
able to deal with this properly?

iwlwifi working for anyone?
by Thomas J. Baker
I'd like to know if anyone has the iwlwifi driver working with the stock
rawhide setup? With NetworkManager, I can see different networks but
trying to connect to one doesn't work. It always fails with the
"association took too long (>20s), failing activation." error.
Thanks,
tjb

Experimental KDE 3.80.3 specfiles
by Kevin Kofler
I have uploaded my current set of specfiles and parallel-installability patches
for KDE 3.80.3. These build on my live FC6 system, Mock builds for FC5, FC6 and
devel still need to be tested. Note that you'll probably need to export
QA_RPATHS=0x0003 to shut up Mock's rpath checking. (There's actually 2 issues
here: 1. CMake's rpath handling is all or nothing, if you enable rpaths
for /opt/kde4/lib, you also get them for /usr/lib and 2. Mock complains even
about the rpaths in /opt/kde4/lib.) There's another RPM issue too: the
debuginfo extraction doesn't want to do its job on the libraries
in /opt/kde4/lib, whereas strangely it works for the binaries in /opt/kde4/bin.
So you end up with unstripped libraries in the main package and missing
debuginfo sources in /usr/src/debug.
I currently have packages for kdelibs4, kdepimlibs4 and kdebase4. This is what
I'm most interested in, because it's all that's needed to port most KDE apps
(the porting scripts in kdesdk can be helpful, but luckily they're scripts so
you don't have to compile them ;-) ). It would be best if the people most
interested in getting the rest of the packages done (e.g. those who can't wait
for Okular, Ligature or whatever ;-) ) would step in to help getting the rest
done.
Be warned that /opt/kde4/bin/konqueror crashes immediately if you run it
without an argument, but if you give it a URL to open, it works (to some
extent... it's obviously not ready for daily use, this is pre-alpha software
after all).
Note that I don't know if the kde4.desktop in /usr/share/xsessions actually
does anything useful, I took that from Chitlesh and fixed the obvious syntax
error, but I haven't tested it, I'm not interested in running full KDE 4
sessions anyway at this stage of KDE development.
My specfiles are here:

Which unresolved bugs block a release?
by John Poelstra
Hi,
Being somewhat new to the Fedora releases I'm looking for a better understanding of how the release process works and the methodology Fedora uses to determine when a release is ready to ship. I'd like to document this if it isn't done already.
Earlier in the week this page was discussed: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/7/MustHave
I am curious how we determine which open bugs must also be fixed in order to reach GA? I would think some of these bugs are tied to the "MustHaves?" I ran a few queries and was left wondering how bugs really do play into the GA of a new release when there are so many open bugs from the previous releases and "Development."
I ran a quick query of the Fedora Core and found the following number of *unresolved* bugs in the state of: "NEW" "ASSIGNED" or "MODIFIED."
Product: "Fedora Core"
Version:
FC5T1 20
FC5T2 24
FC5T3 80
FC5GA 1,545 --------
FC5 Total 1,669
FC6T1 37
FC6T2 82
FC6T3 153
FC6GA 2,315 --------
FC6 Total 2,587
Development 2,859
----------
Total Bugs 7,115
==========
This raised a few questions for me:
1) Is there a mechanism to know which of the bugs above must be fixed or FC7 to GA?
2) What process do we go through to close these bugs?
3) How does Fedora decide a release is ready to GA?
4) How are bugs from previous releases considered in the planning process?
Thanks,
John

KDE-Live-CD (Round 2): testing of included packages
by Sebastian Vahl
Hi.
Yo may have noticed that I've chosen 5 basic rounds for the KDE-LiveCD [1]. To
the first round (choosing packages) I've only got some few answers. So I
think the current cd layout is ok.
The next round should be the testing of the installed packages. Some of them
may need some configuration to work from a livecd. Some things I have noticed
so far:
- knetworkmanager vs. kwifimanger: I don't own a laptop. So I've not noticed
that kwifimanager is also started automatically. Splitting of kdenetwork
should resolve this point.
- the start of kdm is really slow (compared with gdm)
And the current version has also some problems:
- When selinux is enabled the system-config-tools are not working. Booting
with enforcing=0 or selinux=0 avoids this. That is a point where I need some
help because I have not much experiences with selinux.
- minor issue: messagebus complains about an username "gdm"
If someone knows a good hoster I can upload the current version to it. This
could make it a little bit easier for some people to just test the cd.
Note to the localized versions: Because I don't get _any_ mail for the needed
configurations, this point would left to the local communities completely.
This also affects the third point in the test plan (3).
Sebastian

[BUG] Mounted partitions are not showing up and CD/DVD link not correct
by Mark
Hey,
First the "Mounted partitions are not showing up" bug.
this bus is also in Fedora core 6 and i submitted it here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=213768
and i must say that i`m really amazed that this bug is in it so long and
that not a single person seems to complain about it.
i don`t know how it is with you guys but i would like my mounted partitions
to show up in the computer window like they are supposed to do.
so about 6 months ago (or more) i found out about this bug and not a single
people of the bugzilla stuff could point me to a fix or another solution..
therefore i also wonder if the bugzilla is even usefull if this forum
(actually the skilled members there):
http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1172605///fedora%2Cpart...,
tweakers.net) could solve my problem in just a few days.
and isn`t there a site where all the pilicy`s are listed and described?
now as annoying as the bug is.. the fix is quite simple.
locate and destroy "99-redhat-storage-policy-fixed-drives.fdi". (or: rename
it, vaporize it, whatever.. as long as linux can`t see the file anymore)
i would also like to ask the fedora people if they could please fix this in
the next fedora version (so in Core 7). as of this moment this bug is in
fedora.
Now for the dvd link that`s not correct.
the "CD-RW/DVD±RW Drive" link in: computer:/// is very nice but not working.
i`m getting: "unable to mount media" and it`s working fine when i mount it
manually. the mount point i use is /dev/dvd mounted to /mnt/dvd so..
something wrong in the cd/dvd checking script? (if it`s even existing)
@all of fedora:
good job everyone!! i like it alot. though you will probable see some more
bug reports of me here on this list.
if you need more info about any of those bugs or some logs.. just ask me.
good luck fixing,
Mark.

Quota per directory
by Ahmed Kamal
Coming from a systems administration background, I was very surprised to
find out that fedora (well Linux actually) doesn't have a per directory
quota. It is very common and needed IMHO to have a quota per directory, as
the directory basically represents a project some people are working on. One
would want to make sure that a certain project would not consume all disk
space. Only XFS seemed to have per "project" quota (I even think the Linux
implementation doesn't have that!)
Is there any technical reason why ext3 does not offer such functionality, or
has it just not been done? Is anyone aware of any patches to add such
functionality?
