First, anyone has any idea when vim7-release will be released into
Second, will it be possible to push it downstream, either as an upgrade,
or by using FE? (Can FE replace core component?)
The /sbin and /usr/sbin directories contain many utilities that are
useful to non-superusers, such as ifconfig, netstat, arp, fuser, lsusb,
runlevel, dumpe2fs, hwclock, lsof, traceroute, and many others.
Obviously, most of those utilities can do -more- when run as superuser,
but that doesn't diminish their value to mortals.
For years, one of the first changes I've made to my Fedora (and RHL)
systems is to comment out 'if' in /etc/profile that adds
"/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/sbin" only to the path of the superuser:
# Path manipulation
#if [ $EUID = 0 ]; then
Here's my question: Why don't we take that 'if' in the
default /etc/profile, so those directories are in everyone's (default)
- This change may encourage users to perform more tasks as
non-superuser, which can only be a Good Thing(tm).
- Utilities which a mortal user can't/shouldn't use are already
protected from execution by permission or other mechanisms (e.g.,
explicit checks in 'neat' and 'lokkit').
- The hit for the additional path searching is miniscule. Really.
Thoughts? (Am I missing something?)

I have a (old) HP6300C USB scanner, that used to work with a usbscanner
(or was that hpscanner?) kernel module. That kernel module is gone, now
xsane and kooka only can use it via libusb. The problem is this only
seems to work when i am root. Is there a way to let normal users use the

Just to point out that enabling the "Composite" extension in Rawhide's
Xorg to try out Aiglx makes firefox exit with a nasty X error when it tries
to use the flash plugin.
Unless this is a bug in Xorg (which I doubt), it's now up to Macromedia to
fix the issue. I just wanted to point it out to other Rawhide testers that
could have been having the same issue without knowing any workaround ;-)
Clean custom Red Hat Linux rpm packages : http://freshrpms.net/
Fedora Core release 5.89 (Rawhide) - Linux kernel 2.6.16-1.2196_FC6
Load : 0.92 1.01 0.58
Actually the vte library in the aiglx repo needs an update.
FC5 has vte 0.12.1 wheras aiglx comes with 0.12.0.
As a result -> gnome-terminal doesent start anymore
p.s. are there new packages coming soon? Simply ask because i also
have that "blue everything" problem when turning metacitys composite
Radeon 9000 mobile here. r250.
