Upgrading FC4 -> FC5 via yum.
by Naoki
Yes, I know it's not supported.
That said normally by test 2 it works, and by "works" I mean happens but
could break stuff. That's fine with me as I just want to test it but I
can't get dependencies resolved. Has anybody got this to work with
rawhide yet?
I think modular X along with a few other things are causing my problems.
For those interested this is how my setup dies :

suspend/hibernate on desktops
by Andy Burns
I've been playing with the pm-suspend and pm-hibernate on my desktop
withe recent kernels (rawhide and davej repo) sometimes I it dies,
sometimes it nearly works, sometimes it refuses to sleep but comes
straight back to life, I think once it even came back to life after
susppending, all good fun :-)
Just wondering are the developers particularly interested in getting
suspend/resume working on desktops in FC5, or is the prime focus to get
it working on "popular" laptops first? Since my test box is intended to
end up as a htpc, I'd appreciate anything which helps it be as silent as
possible, but I don't want to raise diversions if the focus is elsewhere ...
Thoughts?

edit root alias when installing the OS
by Florin Andrei
Wouldn't make sense to edit /etc/aliases while installing the OS and ask
the operator to provide a real email as an alias?
It is a very common error to forget the root alias. As a result, the
email sent by housekeeping software (such as logwatch) is ignored, often
with unpleasant results.
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2006-January/thread.html#00045
This may or may not require to edit the relayhost variable in the MTA
(ask the operator to provide a default mail relay), I'm not sure
(depending on how "correct" or thorough the installer should be).
Anyway, food for thought and discussion.

I opened bug 177984, but actually it is indeed a general file system
navigation problem.
It happens also with gimp and gedit, when trying to enter a directory
where you have not permission for. Donna if I can change application
for a bug number or if I have to repost.
In the last case, which application do I choose?

You are right. Sorry for that.

Re: suspend/hibernate on desktops
by Bojan Smojver
Quoting Dave Jones <davej redhat com>:
> Most of the diff between in-kernel suspend and suspend2 is
> the bells & whistles like compression, splash screens, etc.
If that were true, then vanilla suspend code would work on my notebook
but it would just be uglier and slower. However, it isn't just uglier
and slower, it also hangs my X consistently on resume.
The internals of suspend2 are explained in the file
Documentation/power/internals.txt, once you apply the patch. I'm no
kernel hacker, but it looks like the algorithms for doing things have
been changed - it's not just spit and polish.
On the practical side, the "bells and whistles" of suspend2 make my
system actually suspend/resume reliably (it's been like that for months
and months now) and fast. Most "pretty stuff" (splash, text/graphical
progress etc.) is already in userspace with suspend2.
Let me reiterate once more: one of the best parts of suspend2 is
support. Nigel makes sure things actually get fixed wrt. real systems
that people use on variety of distributions. I am yet to see a query
about a problem go unanswered on the list.
In conclusion, I wouldn't just dismiss suspend2 to as some redundant
patch. It makes many real systems actually suspend and resume, unlike
the vanilla code.
