Kernel RPM question: What if...
by Martin Stone
Hi,
What if I wanted to build a kernel RPM for FC1 that was like the existing 2.4.22
ones except for being 2.4.26? Where would I start? I see that the spec is
fairly long, and includes a bunch of patches, etc. Can anyone give me a hint on
a starting point? Or am I barking up the wrong tree entirely?
The reason I'm trying to do this is that with FC1 stock kernels I am getting
random kernel *freezes* - not panics or even oopses - on multiple machines even
when trying the usual frequently recommended "apm=off acpi=off nohlt"
recommended incantations. It's my hope that some kind of bugfix has been
applied somewhere along the line that would address this problem, as I can't
seem to debug it.
Any ideas of any kind in this vein would be greatly appreciated at this point...
Thanks,
Martin

python and x86_64 problem
by seth vidal
Hi,
Troubleshooting this bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=122304
I found something that could be a problem on x86_64 for python:
try this on x86_64:
foo='www.redhat.com'
foo.encode("idna")
depending on your encoding that's set you'll get either the correct:
www.redhat.com
or
www.redhat..om
we look on line 6 of
/usr/lib64/python2.3/encodings/idna.py at:
dots = re.compile(u"[\u002E\u3002\uFF0E\uFF61]")
that works great on x86 - so a little further down on line 153 you see:
labels = dots.split(input)
the input in this question is like the url above.
so try this bit of code on your own x86_64 python 2.3.3 system:
import re
dots = re.compile(u"[\u002E\u3002\uFF0E\uFF61]")
foo = 'www.redhat.com'
labels = dots.split(foo)
print labels
you'll find it is:

print labels
you'll find it is:
['www.redhat.', 'om']
while on x86 it is:
['www', 'redhat', 'com']
which is correct - 3 label sections from rfc 3490
so I went looking for the problem a little bit and found in _sre.c
#if defined(MS_WIN64) || defined(__LP64__) || defined(_LP64)
/* require smaller recursion limit for a number of 64-bit platforms:
* Win64 (MS_WIN64), Linux64 (__LP64__), Monterey (64-bit AIX) (_LP64)
*/
/* FIXME: maybe the limit should be 40000 / sizeof(void*) ? */
#define USE_RECURSION_LIMIT 7500
I'm wondering if that FIXME is accurate - I've not tested the change yet
but it seems like a potential problem for regexes like this - or more to
the point anything using the HTTPHandler in python.
Can someone more experienced at python _sre internals take a look at
this?
This will most likely effect up2date, yum, and many network-interacting
python applications using http.
Thanks

boot.iso && dhcp
by matt whiteley
I install my test machine most every day from the devel tree. I know
this is not an approved method of using the test release but it works
for me, and I am interested in seeing the differences in anaconda etc.
The last two days booting from the boot.iso in the devel tree, my
machine is not asking for dhcp properly. I have a dlink 530tx+ network
card that it loads the module and finds an eth0. My dhcp server logs
have no mention of it asking for an address. After a timeout it
reports "pump told us: no DHCP reply received."
Since this is only happening with the boot.iso from 5/4 and 5/5 which
is when the kernel revs 349 and 350 were introduced I thought this may
be a kernel issue. I saw nothing in bugzilla that was applicable, but
thought I would try here first.
thanks,

yum and strange happenings.
by d_bradsh@bellsouth.net
Hey there you all.
I just updated from yesterdays updates to todays, and yum is acting strangly. First of all, Yum is working, but my screen scrolls continuously while the updates are being downloaded. I just wanted to know if this is a *new feature*, or something else. I asked around on #fedora, and no one would answer, so i assume no one knew. Thanks

kernel low-latency follow up question
by Matthew L. Dunkle
I understand now that instability concerns were responsible for the
decision to remove the kernel low-latency patch beginning with the 2179
fedora core 1 release. And thank you for those explanations.
However, I would like to suggest that for many of us this is an
important patch, and there is actually no need to remove it altogether.
This patch used to be equipped with a proc filesystem / sysctl control
parameter, allowing the patch to be integrated into the kernel, and
disabled by default. This would relieve the instability problems for
the general populous, but allow users such as myself to easily enable
the patch on systems where it is still needed.
Yes, I know I could re-install the patch myself, but given the other
changes that redhat routinely makes to the kernel, I have found it
extremely difficult in the past to pick up the patch files and install
them as is. We use the redhat distribution where I work, and it is very
difficult at best to get "non-standard" patches installed by system
administration personnel into their system installation procedures,
especially patches that I have had to re-tailor by hand.
Thank you,
Matt Dunkle

Gnome 2.6.1 and FC2
by David Wagoner
I was reading the Gnome release schedule and saw that
Gnome 2.6.1 is going to be released very soon with a
lot of bug fixes, some new translations and a few
performance improvements and was curious if it is
going to make it into FC2 or if a patched version of
Gnome 2.6.0 will be used.

mailman testing needed
by Warren Togami
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=105638#c12
Anyone using FC1 or FC2 mailman? Please rebuild this SRPM and see if it
works for you. I tried to address the rpm -V and .py byte compile
issue, but I am unable to quickly test this myself. Be prepared to
downgrade back to the previous mailman version with --oldpackage if this
test has failed.
If this works, FC2 can finally fix this bug...

Problem on package installation
by Tim Niemueller
Hi there.
Finally I found the time to upgrade my FC1 box to FC2t3 (I should
mention that this has been a RH8 box with Ximian and RH 9 before) via
"apt-get dist-upgrade". This worked pretty good until some Gnome
packages where about to be installed:
On some packages I got error message about missing DTD for some help
files as it seemed that oasis-open.org has been done (or maybe still
is). The installation took awfully long then since it was waiting for
the timeout on each file. I ended up in adding www.oasis-open.org to my
hosts file to point to a local webserver with an immediate 404...
An example error message looks like:
error : Unknown IO error
/usr/share/gnome/help/gedit/zh_TW/gedit.xml:9: I/O warning : failed to
load external entity
"http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.1.2/docbookx.dtd"
]>
^
/usr/share/gnome/help/gedit/zh_TW/gedit.xml:908: parser error : Entity
'tilde' not defined
The first lines appear once per file. The latter line once per entity in
that file -> very often. It clutters the screen and takes a loot of time.
The packages I know of that have this problem (the installation ran
unattended and I did not see all packages) are:
gnome-media (very long)
gnome-applets (also very long)
gedit
file-roller
I looked at the gedit spec and I assume the scrollkeeper is causing the
problems here...
First I thought this should be done at compile time but as it seems this
updates the search database and the like? Maybe then it would be a good
idea to install a local copy of the DTDs needed to avoid such problems.
