Synaptic Touchpad
by Daryll Strauss
Mike,
Any comments on the problems with the Synaptics touch pad on laptops?
Since it's common on a lot of laptops it's a step back from FC1 to FC2
right now. It's really painful to use in this state.
Just to make sure I'm clear, the touch pad now jitters badly, no longer
supports taping for mouse clicks, and no longer supports the scroll
wheel area. These all worked under FC1 and no longer do. There's two or
three bugs files on the topic.

cdrom not a valid block device
by Remco Treffkorn
With kernel 327 and 351 (only ones I tried) I get the following when trying to
mount /mnt/cdrom:
mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device
eject gives:
eject: unable to open `/dev/hdc'
cat /proc/ide/hdc/driver: ide-default version 0.9.newide
cat /proc/ide/hdc/media: cdrom
On a PPC laptop with 351 it works!
cat /proc/ide/hdb/driver: ide-cdrom version 4.61
What determines which driver is beeing used? Is this in-kernel?
Cheers,
Remco

I2O kudzu + anaconda Status
by Warren Togami
Test results from I2O installation... failure.
I rebuilt my own tree with rawhide + modified kudzu + grub + lvm2.
Booted x86_64 boot.iso.
<jeremy> warren_laptop: I haven't moved them yet... still staring at
anaconda. but going cross-eyed, so think I'll move them and just finish
looking at anaconda in the morning
<jeremy> you'll get told that there are no hard drives in the loader,
but then if you continue, you should see them in disk druid
Anaconda says there are no hard drives in the loader, and when I go to
Disk Druid it says this fatal message, "An error has ocurred - no valid
devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please check
your hardware for the cause of this problem."
In ALT-F2, kudzu-probe displays this among the devices:
Scanning for SCSI Controllers
Device Distributed tech|SmartRAID V Controller:
Desc: Distributed Tech|SmartRAID V Controller
Driver: dpt_i2o
Device: None
kudzu still knows about the old 2.4 kernel dpt_i2o driver, while in this
kernel we are using i2o_block. I suspect kudzu or hwdata needs
changing, and kudzu needs more changing to work properly here. I am
working more on this again in several hours after I fix a few xorg-x11
upgrade issues.

kernel testing request
by Arjan van de Ven
Hi,
We're chasing that IDE dmesg spew bug hard and we have a test kernel with
what we think will fix it. I would like to ask the people who got the IDE
errors in kernel 351/352 to please test kernel 353 from
http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.6
and report to me or in bug 122648 if the errors have gone away.
If they haven't I'd like to get the output of cat /proc/ide/hda/identify
(assuming hda is the disk in question) for futher investigation.
Thanks,
Arjan van de Ven

Force IDE flush on shutdown

heh
I noticed that on FCT3 every time I rebooted, my ext3 journal was being

I guess this was the problem?

Thanks for pointing this out. I've informed the maintainer of the 1.6
mozilla.gr.jp language pack link.

It's late to notice something like this, but hopefully it'll get in
before the freeze.
Next time, please file a bug in bugzilla.

project to get desktop items to follow HIG so it can get included in FC3
by Kristof Vansant
I was thinking: if we just put all the package there Name=, GenericName=,
Comment= lines
(only the english version) on a wiki and let people add a better name,
genericname, etc following the HIG.
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/1.0/desktop-integration.html
After 2 months the best one's are selected. Then people can start
translating it to there language.
After 3 months after the freezing date. So after there translated. The
results are put in .desktop files and send to the maintainers.
With maintainers I mean the programme and the package maintainers.
This will let other distro's also profit from this effort.
example: send gimp.desktop to gimp fedora and gimp
Wiki example:
xchat.desktop
original:
Name=IRC Client
GenericName=IRC Client
Comment=X-Chat
lupus:
Name=X-Chat IRC Client
GenericName=IRC Client
Comment=For chatting on IRC
PS: if everything goes to plan the new desktop files can be in FC3
