unofficial FC-devel installer boot floppies
by Barry K. Nathan
I've created a set of unofficial, experimental FC-devel installer boot
floppies. They're available here:
http://math.uci.edu/~bnathan/linux/fc2-floppies-i386/
Right now I've posted floppies for rawhide (fc-devel) as of 2004-05-09.
There are three floppies. No matter what kind of install you are
performing, you need all 3 disks. It's currently very bare-bones; it
does not offer the user the option of adding command line arguments.
Go ahead and try these out if you're interested...
FWIW, here's where I obtained the various components I hacked together:
FreeDOS kernel & command.com: FreeDOS Beta9 pre-release5
cat.exe: dosemu-freedos-1.2.0-3mdk
loadlin: whatever ships in the dosutils directory with SuSE 9.0 FTP
syslinux, memdisk: syslinux-2.08-3 (from fc-devel)
vmlinuz, initrd: isolinux directory from fc-devel
autoexec.bat: I wrote it. I just realized I didn't think about what kind
of license to use for it -- oops. Any suggestions? Right now I'm leaning
toward GPL.

Is it intentional that my hard disk spins down during a reboot now
with kernels .356 and .358?

Test 3 bugs.
by Naoki
ACPI on most laptops kernel panics.
NVidia driver locks up on exiting X windows ( display corruption and
then hang).
X error on startup (not fatal, press a button ok but still ugly).
People know about these and I can forget them?

dovecot default authentication change
by Phil Anderson
Hi,
I just upgraded my system from FC1 to Test 3, and it broke my dovecot
installation. When I looked in the system log, it was immediately
obvious. The default authentication in dovecot has changed from passwd
authentication to be postgres.
What is the reason for this? The best thing that dovecot has going for
it is that it requires no setup, compared to cyrus-imap. Now that this
default behaviour has changed, it changes this.
Is this intentional? Or has it just been transfered from upstream? In
which case, I think Fedora should have passwd authentication by default.
Any thoughts on this?

/proc/ide/ firmware info for CD/DVD writers?
by Chris Kloiber
With the older ide-scsi method of accessing cd and dvd writers, we
conveniently found our drive firmware version in /proc/scsi/scsi.
(Important info if you want to use 8x media in your 8x drive it seems. I
still have not seen a good burn at 8x.) I tried looking for it today in
/proc/ide/* without success. Is it elsewhere, or just MIA? How tough to
add it to either 'identity' or 'model', or add a new 'firmware' file?

xorg-x11-6.7.0-2

* Sat May 08 2004 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 6.7.0-2
- Add -Wa,--noexecstack to AsCmd, in order to force all assembler files to
use GNU stacks. This was accomplished in an alternative way in our XFree86
4.3.0 packaging via XFree86-4.3.0-redhat-exec-shield-GNU-stack.patch which
patched every assembler file to add a .note.GNU-stack section, which is
considered a superior solution, but our patch was non-portable to non-GNU
systems. This is a cleaner hack for now. (FC2BLOCKER #122708)
- Modified main rpm pre script to massage the X server config file(s) to
remove XkbRules lines to help avoid (FC2BLOCKER #120858 and a zillion
duplicates), and to ensure that the only active X server config file is
xorg.conf (if any is present), and any other XFree86 4.x config files are
renamed to .obsolete, which will help to minimize config file name confusion,
and provide some sanity on upgrades, as all users will use xorg.conf by
default regardless now. (FC2BLOCKER #122454) (Fix based on patch from wtogami)
* Fri May 07 2004 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 6.7.0-1
- Added xorg-x11-6.7.0-libxf86config-monitor-freq-fix.patch to fix a problem
caused by gratuitous upstream libxf86config changes which force the
HorizSync and VertRefresh lines to always be written out to the config file
in commented out form. (FC2BLOCKER #120950, 122341, 122573, 122439, 122072,

k3b as default CD burner
by Pyroman[FO]
I was wondering why gtoaster was still the default cd burner with Fedora
Core. k3b is updated more often and much easier to use than gtoaster,
IMO. gtoaster hasn't been updated in a while. Any specific reasons?

How do I control my tape library robot? AFAIK that is only controlled
via sg (the other SCSI modules ignore tape robots).
