And volunteers do things that wage earners don't necessarily have time
to do, or enough time to do well....

like bugzilla triage. Speaking of triage...
I'm looking at the FC2 schedule and thinking feb 13's string change
deadline is getting a little close. It would be a good idea for
volunteers to comb through bugzilla and find bug reports
that could have the StringChange keyword:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/describekeywords.cgi
StringChange: A string change that would break translations is required
to fix this bug. i.e. fix the bug before the string freeze.
Basically that means finding bugreports that talk about bugs in user
visible text that would need to be retranslated if fixed. Simple typos
don't count. More like a change in meaning. If you are interested in
helping out marking existing bug reports, follow this recipe for action:
1)
search through old bugzilla bug reports, you might even want to search
through red hat 8 and 9 reports as well as fedora core reports
2)
find a bug number you think could use the StringChange keyword
3)
*try to flag me down in #fedora-bugs channel on freenode irc network *or
drop a note into the triage mailinglist
https://lists.dulug.duke.edu/mailman/listinfo/fedora-triage-list
*or write a comment of the form your_irc_nick|triage->stringchange
</shameless plug>

Synaptics driver in Fedora
by Warren Togami
Mike Harris said that he would integrate the Synaptics touchpad driver
into the Fedora RPM if somebody does the necessary work to integrate it
cleanly, test, and submit the patches. It is an extremely low priority
for him so it is highly unlikely that it wont happen unless somebody
does this necessary work.
I would suggest posting your suggested patches for the .spec and discuss
driver setup procedure on this list, if you prepare this.

HD spinning is making the computer freeze
by Jean-Rene Cormier
Hi, I was doing some graphic editing yesterday with The Gimp and from
time to time the HD would start spinning and the computer would freeze
for like 4-5 minutes, I can't do anything during that time, the cursor
doesn't even move, all that's happening is the HD spinning. Last night I
checked how long it took to come back and it took over 10 minutes, the
clock was stuck at 11:51 and when it stopped spinning the clock changed
to 12:03.
What could be causing this? I'm thinking that it's because I don't have
much RAM and it has to use the swap file a lot.
The computer is a Dell Inspiron 300m laptop, with a 1.2GHz CPU, 256MB of
RAM and 40Gb 5400RPM HD.
Here's what top gave me yesterday right after it did it for the last
time yesterday:
Mem: 245948k av, 241596k used, 4352k free, 0k shrd, 3736k
buff
139152k active, 65000k inactive
Swap: 522104k av, 274964k used, 247140k free 34336k
cached
Also I noticed that X use an aweful lot of RAM, is this normal? I'm
running KDE btw.

Pentium 4
by Gerhard Prade
Hello,
i am not a developer, but have a question. I tried last time
Gentoo-Linux and i think it is great to optimize a hole distribution of
linux for a CPU-Achitcture (like Pentium 4 and not only for 386).
But Gentoo is for me not easy to use. So i want to use in future fedora,
like i do now.
Now my question. It is posible to optimize one of the next releases of
fedora for 686 CPU or greater like Pentium 4?
Thanks all, Gerhard
PS: Sorry for my bad english.

Who do I bug about getting a groff-1.19 RPM dropped in the repository?
1.18 has some odd bug that clips off the top couple of inches of a PIC

dot allowed adduser/useradd
by Balint Cristian
Hi !
I already digged maillist, i understand why cannot be dot in the username
while i "adduser", my Q is that if there is some workaround or some patch, i really need to allow dot in usernames
it is to ugly to modify /etc/pass entry's.
I looket too at src.rpms i coud not figure out where to touch, i see no redhatish patch wich remove the dot feauture
and in tarball is difficult to find out.
Any sugestion ?

sylpheed (and inclusions)
by Pete Zaitcev
Bill,
if akira is not taking care of the package, and if we include sylpheed
in FC2, I'd like to take it. Seems like a harmless enough exercise,
it cannot be worse than having a dead maintainer, right?
