Developing graphical applications
by Alexandre Strube
Hello list,
I want to develop a surveillance application, which would run on a
fedora machine.
This application will capture images from a bt878 card (4-input type),
and show the four inputs on a single window.
This is quite simple to do on C with SDL, in fullscreen, using
video4linux functions to grab the images from bt878, and creating 4 sdl
surfaces, one for each window.
However, as the application gets more complex, develop a user interface
in fullscreen, in C, is too much complicated to develop and maintain.
So, I decided to use GTK for the interface, and python as the
development language, which would make me learn python also, this would
make much easier to develop windows, menus and dialogs with glade, and
just put the captured images on the right places.
My problem begins here: How I put a image window inside a gtk container,
in python. And this image needs to be updated fast, as the surveillance
cameras are sending data all the time. something like 6fps for each
window would be ok.
And all of this must run in Fedora, with the minimum external
dependencies possible (the reason I've posted it here, and not in a
python list).
I though of pygame (python + sdl), but it won't do, as a surface needs
to be in its own window. Don't know how I could do this under a GTK
window... Any advice?
Thanks for your reply.

Keyboard switcher in test1
by Konstantin Ryabitsev
Hello, all:
The gnome keyboard switching applet in test1 doesn't work -- it
gives an OAFID error. It's a real hindrance to some of us who like
switching their keyboard layouts for fun and profit. :) What needs
to be done to resolve this issue? I don't think it's upstream, and
b.r.c searching is not giving me any results.
Cheers,

include php-imap in FC2 (bug #115535)
by Kaj J. Niemi
Hi,
I'm advocating that php-imap, which was removed from Rawhide in php-4.3.4-4,
should be reintroduced before the release of FC2. I noticed it was missing
while preparing to evaluate FogBUGZ (shameless plug, google will tell you more)
and migrating a IMP installation from FreeBSD to Fedora.
Since it looks like it got disabled because the "imap" package providing the
c-client API vanished it would be rather easy to recreate a c-client package
for the libraries/header files only and ignore the rest. PHP would then be
rebuilt with the corresponding new buildrequire statement.
I've filed bug #115535 for tracking purposes
<https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=115535> and Joe Orton
requested me to take the discussion here instead of bugzilla. I'm also able
to package the c-client library based on the previous imap rpm if that is
the conclusion of this discussion.
Thanks.

XFree86: New via driver with DRI
by Mike A. Harris
I have updated the "via" video driver in XFree86-4.3.0-56 in
rawhide with Alan Cox's latest driver. The new driver has DRI
support however a typo in the spec file caused the DRI driver not
to get built in 4.3.0-56, so only the new 2D driver is present in
this build.
The next build which fixes the typo, 4.3.0-57 is currently being
built, and should contain the via DRI 3D driver unless something
else goes wrong. ;o)
I'm going to sleep so wont be babysitting the build, nor
doublechecking the packages for sanity before tomorrow sometime.
Welcome to RAWhide. ;o)
Please test the new XFree86 build out on via hardware, and report
any problems in bugzilla. DRI support requires that you be
running the latest Fedora development kernel. I don't know if
the Fedora Core 1 or RHL 9 kernels have the via DRM module in
them or not. If not - nag davej. ;o)

Fedora build system
by W. Michael Petullo
Does the amazing beast known as the Fedora Build System exist yet? If so,
where does one find it? Fedora's Package Submission QAPolicy states:
[...]
Release Manager does ...
1. Send SRPM to build system.
2. Send resulting SRPM and RPMS to signing server.
3. Sign
4. Post candidate builds
5. Change bug status to RESOLVED PENDING
[...]
I don't know where to find this build system. I have only found an
email from Warren to fedora-devel dated Nov 18, 2003 laying out the
architecture of the system.
Could someone clarify this portion of the release procedure?

Some status stuff, and transition of fedora.us list
by Warren Togami
As the fedora.us Extras merger with fedora.redhat.com draws nearer, I
believe we should move all discussion to fedora-devel-list(a)redhat.com
list rather than continue on fedora-devel(a)fedora.us. The old list has
served us well for the past year, but I believe it will help to focus
all efforts on the new list.
fedora-announce(a)fedora.us will continue to operate for announcements of
new fedora.us package releases. fedora.us will continue to accept FC1
and FC1.90 packages for Extras inclusion. Later fedora.us will go into
pure maintenance mode, existing only to support fedora.us Extras FC1 and
earlier, and some infrastructure for the Fedora Legacy project. The old
Extras will be maintained in bugzilla.fedora.us and
fedora-devel-list(a)redhat.com as long as the community developers still
care about those packages. 1.90 is only temporarily at fedora.us mainly
as a staging area for importing to fedora.redhat.com Extras CVS when it
goes online.
http://advogato.org/person/wtogami/
I wrote some more notes and random other stuff in my new blog here.
The goal is for the FC1 to FC1.90 rebuilt packages, fixed packages, and
a few more inclusions for Extras are to be imported into the CVS server
when it goes online "soon". I do not know how soon.
Please do not wait for the CVS. Continue submitting stuff to
bugzilla.fedora.us. Fix and QA the packages already there. The stuff
already published at fedora.us stuff will probably be imported first,
and developer track records there taken into consideration for "who to
trust sooner" with CVS access to certain package ACL's. (Of course many
other well known developers in the community will be given access
quickly if they follow the legal forms and other requirements that will
posted when it goes live.)
It is my personal goal to have the CVS and new infrastructure being
built at fedora.redhat.com to accelerate development and lower time
overhead, without lowering the bar of quality that fedora.us has
achieved during the past year. More and better tools will need to be
written for automated package tests, GPG signing/checking requirements,
and other stuff in order to make these otherwise boring matters of
procedure seemless and quick for developers.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla-devel/
While on that subject, I realized I forgot to mention this earlier. dkl
has setup a non-production Bugzilla here where we can test Bugzilla
concepts, and perhaps more importantly, safely test XML-RPC interfaces
of command-line tools like the stuff ESR was working on. I am
personally not fully convinced that such tools will be effective, but I
am interested to see working code prove the concept.
Otherwise... kill those FC2 bugs. The 2.6 GNOME and kernel will be HUGE
for us as a community in so many ways. With your help, let us make this
the most awesome release ever.
