[ANNOUNCE] apmd 3.2.1
by J.D. Hood
In October 2002 Avery Pennarun, the current upstream maintainer of
apmd, agreed that Debian maintainers should go ahead and modify
the program in order to close certain bugs submitted by Debian
users; after a period of testing we would submit the changes back
upstream.
The changes were duly made and the modified program has resided
happily in Debian unstable and testing for several months; no problems
have been reported. The tarball was recently cleaned up to prepare it
for upstream release. You can download the new tarball,
apmd_3.2.1.orig.tar.gz from a Debian mirror or from:
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/a/apmd/
The ChangeLog file has been updated to describe all the changes that
have occurred since release 3.0.2.

Self Introduction: Erik S. LaBianca
by Erik LaBianca
1. Full legal name
Erik Sakala LaBianca
2. Country, City
Berrien Springs, MI, USA
3. Profession or Student status
Software Developer
4. Company or School
Interlink, Inc.
5. Your goals in the Fedora Project
* Which packages do you want to see published?
I'd like to see all the software I use on a regular basis included with
Fedora Core and Extras. The sore spots right now are amavisd, the
firebird database, rsnapshot, and an assortment of CPAN modules.
* Do you want to do QA?
Yes, if it means I don't have to maintain my own custom RPMS anymore :)
* Anything else special?
I'm particularly interested in seeing a user-friendly backup system
included out of the box with fedora. I've also done some work towards an
easy way of creating a kickstart from a modified running system. I think
ease of installation / restore is already a real selling point for
fedora, but it still needs some work.
6. Historical qualifications
* What other projects have you worked on in the past?
Primarily proprietary commercial software, and little unpublished hacks
to open source stuff. I maintain a suite of custom RPMS that we use to
kickstart install all our production servers.
* What computer languages and other skills do you know?
I'm a reasonably competent C++, Java and Delphi/Pascal programmer. I
also speak Perl well but am migrating to Python. I've written tons of
PHP code too but I'm trying to avoid doing it ever again.
I've been using Linux (Slackware, Debian, Redhat, Gentoo, Fedora) for
around 10 years, and have been a system administrator for both Windows
and Linux for the last 4 or so. I've also been the project manager and
system architect for several projects, so I have some useful
communication and problem solving skills.
* Why should we trust you?
Maybe you shouldn't? Wait and see. I have a longtime commitment to linux
and open source, and I have some useful skills.

Bugzilla and Fedora Core 2 Test 1
by W. Michael Petullo
What product should bugs in Fedora Core 2 Test 1 be filed against?
Red Hat Bugzilla provides the following options:
Fedora Core, 1
Fedora Core, devel
Fedora Core, test1
Fedora Core, test2
Fedora Core, test3
I'm not clear whether "Fedora Core, test1" means "Fedora Core 1, test1"
or "Fedora Core <current>, test1." Perhaps Bugzilla has not yet been
updated to reflect Fedora Core 2 Test 1's release?

dvgrab, 1394 and firewire stuff
by Warren Togami
We now have an opportunity to upgrade the "ancient" versions of the
firewire packages before the February 27th deadline. Please suggest
upgrade versions, URL's, exact patches in this thread. It would help if
you actually test them too...

Compiling Fedora... athlon
by Ivan Gyurdiev
Hi, Fedora list,
I run the following thing: ~80% of fedora core development + most of
fedora.us for fedora 1 + most of livna.org for fedora 1 + naoko project
for java + ximian project utopia + custom 2.6 kernel ...
I think it's fairly representative of what Fedora will look like some
time in the distant future. Anyway, I decided to give sources another
try and recompile the distro (athlon optimized). The results are rather
discouraging. In case anyone cares, here's a list of 94 srpms that fail
to compile on my machine for one reason or another, including full logs:
http://128.253.214.219/broken/
Full list of rpms installed is rpms.txt.
You'll notice those are not only fedora core rpms, but also fedora.us,
livna, and naoko. You'll also notice a bunch simply will refuse to
install on athlon, but not on 386 (arch was restricted). I am curious as
to why (is athlon not a 386 superset?). By the way I consider any
failure past the srpm check a bug, so if an important package is
missing, I'm sorry, but the srpm didn't tell me I need it. I don't think
that's the case for most of the failures.
I've submitted bugzillas for several of those (freetype-headers for
gnome-print, the tcsh bug, desktop-printing, some of the gnome
deprecated bugs ... but I prefer mail as the means for communication.
Plus since a bug stayed in rawhide bugzilla for a year and a half before
I got a reply, I just don't trust the thing anymore.
I'll appreciate any help on getting those 94 packages compiled.
If you more need testing from me, please email back.
P.S. Why is this list subscription-only? Is my participation unwanted
if not subscribed? Certainly get that feeling after my mail did not make
it through the moderator for a week or two.

Fedora Bug Day Today...err I guess I mean Tonite..err so I guess i mean Fedora Bug Nite Tonite!!!!!!
by Jef Spaleta
Fedora Bug Day Tonite!!!!!! 7.30pm EST - 'til I fall asleep
Theme: A general call to arms, for bugbusting!!!!!
*Why tonite? Why not today?
Sadly, I'm being forced to be away from all internet connected computers
today, and my wireless neural implant isn't working. Someone is trying
to tell me i have "work" to do, or something. I'm just as confused as
you are about all this. But this evening, unless my isp has other
plans, i'll be jacked into the net for a large chunk of time. Drop by
#fedora-bugs on the freenode network in about oh 10 or so hours from now
and help get involved with the bugzilla triage effort. Though now that
mitr has bugzilla editting rights, you can stop into the irc channel in
the meantime and see if he's around. So if you want to help out with
triage. What is triage?
maybe this will explain:
https://lists.dulug.duke.edu/pipermail/fedora-triage-list/2004-January/00...
*What can i do RIGHT NOW!
Become involved in the fedora.us QA process and help QA packages that
are waiting to be published in the fedora.us addon repo:
http://www.fedora.us/QA
Please look over that list, and pick a package you would like to see
published for the community to enjoy that you are interested in.
There are 348 packages sitting waiting for QA. That's 348 packages the
Fedora community could be enjoying in the published fedora.us repository
trees, once they have made it through the community peer-review process.
Remember, until the full merge is completed and Fedora Extras and
Alternatives is up and running...community packagers are being advised
to use fedora.us's process. How do you become involved in the fedora.us
peer-review process? Easy, read:
http://www.fedora.us/wiki/PackageSubmissionQAPolicy
Not only is this a good way to help out, by being part of the
peer-review process that helps make sure high quality packages are
available to the community, but doing the peer-review QA, can help you
learn how to do better rpm packaging. For those of you who dream of the
fame and fortune of being Fedora Extras contributors down the road,
getting involved in the fedora.us QA process now is a good place to
start.
-jef"technically, getting this notice out 10 hours before I'm going to
be available, actually means this notice isn't late...in fact its
probably the earliest notice i've done for a bug day so far"spaleta

Pam_mount introduction
by W. Michael Petullo
I would like to formally introduce a package I have been working on to
the Fedora community. Pam_mount has been in the Fedora.us QA process for
about three months:
https://bugzilla.fedora.us/show_bug.cgi?id=1013
What is it? Pam_mount is a PAM module that allows one to transparently
mount password-protected volumes upon logging in to a system. It mounts
using one's system password and it supports CIFS, SMB, NCP and loopback
encrypted volumes out of the box. Other volume types could easily be
configured. It can mount volumes that share the same password as your
system account and even, with a little trickery, transparently mount
volumes with unique passwords.
Why do I think it is important? Several people have told me that they
find pam_mount very useful for integrating Linux desktops into Windows/SMB
desktop networks. I hope that this is a more common occurance in the
next few years. I think pam_mount may be able to help.
I have been working hard to get pam_mount to easily fit into Fedora.
For example, I have written a patch for authconfig that allows one to
configure pam_mount using the tool:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=97561&action=view
In addition, I have filed several bug reports in GNOME and Red Hat's
bugzilla databases (and submitted patches in several cases). Many of
these issues are now fixed:
Bug 67605: shut down gconfd on logout
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=67605
Bug 97361: improve exit-gconfd-on-logout chances
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97361
Bug 126071: Gdm does not ensure user's programs exit before calling
pam_close_session
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=126071
What do I want from you? If you are interested in pam_mount then I would
love your help with the pam_mount QA process. In addition, I would like to
have people test my authconfig patch (and submit comments to Bugzilla).
If you work for Red Hat, please consider pam_mount for Fedora Core 3
(or even 2 if possible)!
Thank you -- I look forward to getting your feedback!
