drm/dri problem on FC3 (x86_64?)
by Hugh Caley
I'm having a problem with an install of FC3 on an Opteron machine. The
X performance is deadly slow; glxgears gives me less than 53 FPS. On a
similarly x86 32-bit machine I'm getting well over 500 FPS. It's the
same with both a Matrox G550 and an ATI Radeon 9200 card.
Seems to be a problem with drm and dri initialization.
Anyone else seeing this?
I've added to a bugzilla bug that seems to be on target. There are
errors and xorg.conf snippets there. Interestingly, it seems that it
isn't x86_64 specific.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=142105
Relevant log entries below.
I note that I have no /dev/dri directory. Created one, but it's gone on
reboot. My 32-bit machine has these entries in dmesg, but the 64-bit
machine does not:

Re: Stateless kickstart problem
by Christopher Hotchkiss
Okay here is how I setup my basic stateless network. Please note that
I am still adding more functionality to it, but for the basics it does
work.
1. Requirements:
A server capable of serving rsync, dhcp, nfs, apache. They do not have
to be the same machine, you just need to have access.
A set of workstations, optimally one that has already been completely
setup. Meaning it allows for authentication across the network.
2. Workstation Setup
Setup a workstation with any *NIX style os, Fedora, FreeBSD, Gentoo,
etc.. I would highly recommend you setup nfs home directories, on a
server. Also an authentication scheme would be highly advisable.
3. Setup a snapshot on a rsync server.
An example rsyncd.conf file follows.
[stateless]
path=/srv/Workstation
comment=Post Workstation
uid=0
Here is an example rsync command to do the copy.
rsync -e ssh -av --exclude '/proc/*' --exclude '/sys/*'
IP-address-of-test-machine:/ /srv/Workstation
4. Next setup a Fedora install tree and export it via nfs.
5. Make available the attached kickstart file via a web server. Please
remember to change the address of the install tree, and the address of
the snapshot.
6. You now have a choice, you can setup a dhcp server and use a pxe
boot to start the kickstart or you can make a kickstart install cd as
described at the following link.
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/stateless/sn-caching-clients.html
That should be enough to get you guys going. I have also attached the
client-server program I use to individualize each computer after they
boot. I am still working on a set of scripts to make the snapshot
process a little more automated. It isn't that hard however to change
the rsyncd.conf and copy a directory, so it may not occur.
Happy Hacking and e-mail me if there are any problems with this.

Fedora Project launches Pre-Extras
by Seth Vidal
The Fedora Project is officially launching Fedora Pre-Extras, to work
alongside Fedora Core 3 for i386 and x86_64 based platforms.
What is Pre-Extras?
It is our way of showing you that we've been working hard, as many
packages have been built, and are ready for distribution.
We are working very hard to make the build system work well, and the
infrastructure for this is almost ready, it just has a few kinks that we
are ironing out. As a measure of good faith, CVS for both Core and
Extras has already been opened.
While waiting for Extras to officially launch, use Pre-Extras today!
Where did all these packages come from?
These were packages from the now-merged Fedora.us repository as well as
freshrpms.net repository. So they maintain the same high quality
standards that was imposed previously.
So how do I get it?
Pre-Extras is currently hosted on the FedoraProject.org website, and is
available at:
http://fedoraproject.org/pre-extras/3/
It is available as a YUM repository, and an entry like the following
would suffice (in /etc/yum.conf):
[pre-extras]
name=Pre Extras
baseurl=http://fedoraproject.org/pre-extras/3/$basearch/
gpgcheck=1
There is a temporary Pre Extras GPG key, which all packages are signed
with. The fingerprint:
pub 1024D/1AC70CE6 2004-12-14 Fedora Pre Extras Release <pre-extras(a)fedoraproject.org>
Key fingerprint = 5389 DD00 C5BC 5168 12B4 3272 82ED 9504 1AC7 0CE6
sub 1024g/4E1A9D43 2004-12-14
To import the key:
rpm --import http://fedoraproject.org/pre-extras/RPM-GPG-KEY-Fedora-Pre-Extras
What about bugs?
If you find bugs in the packages, report them at the Fedora Extras
Bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/beta/
A cautionary note...
To paraphrase a Fedora Project contributor, Jef Spaleta, these packages
could eat babies; that is to say, they are built, signed, and ready for
use, but they have not gone through the rigorous QA testing that would
be expected normally from Extras. So if they break, submit a bug report,
but there are no implied warranties or guarantees that they will work.
Use these packages at your own risk!

Fwd for Peter Dedecker: stateless-snapshooter problems
by Hans de Goede
I'm forwarding this for Peter Dedecker because he as problem sending to
the list.

Hans

Hi,
We (the fedora stateless team at UGent,
http://blog.eikke.com/index.php/fedorastateless) setted up a stateless
server, but we are having problems creating snapshots. When we use
stateless-snapshooter, it seems that we need pyGTK (and thus X). On a
server, we normally don't install X on servers, so shouldn't it be
better to make a real command line tool from stateless-snapshooter so X
isn't required anymore? Thanks!

mknod: xxx: Operation not permitted
by Ralf Corsepius
Hi,
Trying to create a char-device as ordinary user, results into this:
# mknod /var/tmp/bla-1.0.0/etc/udev/devices/bla01 c 212 0
mknod: `/var/tmp/bla-1.0.0/etc/udev/devices/bla01': Operation not permitted
Any explanation for this behavior?
Is it mknod trying to be overly clever or is it an selinux bug (This is
on a FC3 system with selinux-policy-targeted)?
This issue prevents one from being able to build rpms containing special
devices as ordinary users.

Self-Introduction: Jonathan Leighton
by Jonathan Leighton [Turnip]
Hi,
I'm Jonathan David Leighton. I live near Reading in England. Currently
I'm in the final year of compulsary education, which means I will be
taking my GCSE exams next summer. I go to Theale Green Community School,
their (terrible) website is here: http://www.thealegreen.org.uk/.
My main purpose here is to get Inkscape (http://inkscape.org/)
published. I'm not interested in doing QA or anything else currently,
but I may be in the future.
I've not worked on any open source projects (yet?). I'm not a programmer
(also may change in the future), my main interests lie in web
development (you might want to look at my website,
http://turnipspatch.com/). I'm fluent in XHTML, CSS and JavaScript. I'm
familiar with XML (just the concepts, I haven't actually had much use
for it yet), and I'm starting to use PHP more and more (I started with
using ASP, but PHP is quite obviously 10 times better). There is
absolutely no reason why you should trust me, but if nobody trusted
anybody then Open Source software wouldn't work. That said, I am aware
that trust is earned rather than given.

Status on that intel GFX chip?
by Kyrre Ness Sjobak
Hello
I just wonder, and i know it has been brought up a zillion times - but
what are the current status of the intel gfx (i815?) xorg driver? Any
updates (rpms) that could be easily pushed into my net via admin-script?
The vesa driver works - but it refuses to do anything more than a bare
minimum resolution, and the intel driver has some... funny... side
effects. Not anything i would like to expose my users to, really
