Eina - gtk2 replacement for xmms
by Michael A. Peters
xmms is (imho) the best music player that ships with FC simply from a
usability standpoint, small screen footprint etc.
However, it does not use the gtk2 interface and does not use the
gstreamer backend.
I found what I think would be a good replacement - it currently does
not work for me, so it has that against it, but that may be because I
updated my gstreamer plugins from stock fc3 (to 0.8.6) though that
hasn't effected other gstreamer apps.
It's called eina - http://bolgo.cent.uji.es/proyectos/eina-en
It has a very small screen footprint, and simple easy to use interface.
It works for me up to the point of actually playing a song, then it
hangs (I've only tried mp3 - I haven't tried flac or ogg). But I think
it is worth looking into for possible inclusion in Fedora Extras and
eventual replacement of xmms, which doesn't seem interested in gtk2 or
gstreamer support.

Icon suggestion
by Peter Backlund
Hi.
I would like to see the current Bluecurve Home-icon changed into one
that uses the same angle/perspective as the rest of the BC icons. I've
cropped the /usr/share/icons/Bluecurve/48x48/emblems/emblem-home.png
icon to 24x24 pixels, which unfortunately cuts one pixel vertically so
that the front edge of the house is at a slightly wrong angle.
Here's what it would look like in Firefox, Nautilus browse mode and
Konqueror:
http://mozer.nailed.org/misc/gtk-home.png
(~300k, 1400x1050 pixels)
Comments?
(Related to that, the Computer icon in Nautilus is too small as you can
see)

[Fwd: Kudos, Congratulation and Many Thanks]
by Nils Philippsen
Hi everybody,
I got a very encouraging mail praising Fedora and I'd like to share it
with you because I think the praise belongs to all the developers,
testers and other contributors, not just to those who can't keep their
mouths shut like me ;-).

-------- Forwarded Message --------
1 December 2004
Mr. Nils Phillippsen
Red Hat.com
Dear Mr. Phillippsen:
I apologize for making you the victim of this message, but you seem to
be relatively high profile in the Red Hat Linux development community.
I believe that many thank yous, plaudits and congratulations are due
your team. Fedora Core simply keeps improving and improving.
I am a relative neophyte to Linux. I came in through the back door, if
you will. A friend of mine is in the hospitality business and the
franchisor imposed upon the franchisees a DOS software system written in
1986 and running in Caldera Linux. The problem is that the franchisees
had no control over any program matters and the franchisor was
constantly downloading private information and selling this to any
buyer. The information included credit card information and cases of
fraud arose.
I asked my friend to send me a complete image of his fixed disk. While
awaiting the arrival of this, I purchased the Red Hat Linux Bible, which
came with Fedora Core 1. This was my introduction to Linux.
I loaded the image on one fixed disk and Fedora on another. I was able
to, “look-in,” on the Caldera system to obtain the information I needed.
I was able to change the root password on the Caldera system and lock
the franchisor out of my friend's system. The, because of the fraudulent
activities, I was able to supply system logs, find dead end dialing
numbers for the purpose of elevating toll charges and remove the auto-
dialer.
After this experience, I upgraded to Linux. I have five computers, plus
one business computer. These I networked, some on wireless (11.02g) and
some by cable with T1 access. I knew Windows had problems, but it was
not until I became familiar with the never-ending features of Linux,
that I realized the extent of Windows shortcomings (I am being nice). I
had converted to Mozilla as soon as it was available for Windows, so I
eliminated the problems of IE6. The most amazing Linus surprise was in
the transfer of files. My business program is in DOS. To transfer 700
files via the Windows network, takes 14 minutes. Linux transfers the
same data in less than a minute. So, I run both SAMBA and NFS.
The GIMP is every bit the equal of Photoshop and Corel PhotoPaint, both
of which I have. OpenOffice is a great word processor. The only program
I miss from Windows is MAGIX Samplitude and Audio Studio. These have
superb sound manipulation and equalizers. I am not aware of any such
equalizers available for Linux.
I have three HP Photosmart printers which I hope to send aboard the next
NASA deep space exploration vehicle. I hope aliens do not find these
printers. They will think we are not as advance a society as they may
have presumed. Linux and CUPS actually make the HP printers function in
an acceptable manner, so I am considering a reprieve for the HP's,
thanks to Linux.
I will not bore you with other details. I merely thank you again for the
fine work you and your team is doing with FC 2 And FC 3, both of which I
use. The only issue is with “eggcups.”
Sincerely,
John MacEwan

Would it make sense to split openoffice.org-i18n up somewhat? For example,
I'm only interested in Finnish and not about Africaans, Catalan, Arabian and
what not. 650MB is pretty much for stuff that is not needed at all; it's a
huge download (although it compresses well), but also takes up disk space
quite much.
Or is it just infeasible idea to split it in smaller parts?
BTW: Anyone tried openoffice 2.0 beta yet? I don't suppose there are fedora
rawhide compatible rpm's for it somewhere?

print configuration
by Trever L. Adams
I am not entirely sure if this is how to do it. But, here goes:
In the past you could configure printers using the RedHat supplied tools
(as found in menus) in Samba. I am no longer seeing this. I have checked
the option in print conf to share the printers and autodiscover them. I
think this is a cups thing. However, this doesn't even seem to be
working with my systems. (I do have all the systems checked to discover
the shared printers.)
Even if this was working, this doesn't share them with the Windows
world.
In FC4 is it possible to add an option in printconf or what not that
will share them via Samba as well as cups method?

Suggestion for some network parameter defaults
by Ralf Ertzinger
Hi.
I have been using the following changes to some network parameters on all
of my machines for a long time, and I was wondering whether they ought to
be set by default.
net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter (current: 0, proposed: 1)
net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects (current: 1, proposed: 0)
net.ipv4.icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts (current: 0, proposed: 1)
net.ipv4.icmp_ignore_bogus_error_responses (current: 0, proposed: 1)
While I admit that the current values can serve a certain use in some
situations, I think that in the majority of configurations the proposed
values are more sensible.

Mobility Electronics have been shipping cardbus hotplug video for about
5 or 6 years now (E1000V). They make fun toys for this sort of testing
and are cheap on ebay generally 8)
