Call for Test Days for Fedora 18
by Adam Williamson
Hey, folks. It's that time again - time to start thinking about Test
Days for Fedora 18.
For anyone who isn't aware, a Test Day is an event usually focused
around IRC for interaction and a Wiki page for instructions and results,
with the aim being to get a bunch of interested users and developers
together to test a specific feature or area of the distribution. You can
run a Test Day on just about anything for which it would be useful to do
some fairly focused testing in 'real time' with a group of testers; it
doesn't have to be code, for instance we often run Test Days for
l10n/i18n topics. For more information on Test Days, see
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days .
Anyone who wants to can host their own Test Day, or you can request that
the QA group helps you out with organization, or any combination of the
two. To propose a Test Day, just file a ticket in QA trac - full details
are at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days/Create . For
instructions on hosting a Test Day, see
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/SOP_Test_Day_management .
You can see the schedule at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Fedora_18_test_days . There are many
slots open right now, with the earliest on 2012-08-09 and the latest
2012-11-01. Consider the development schedule, though, in deciding when
you want to run your Test Day - for some topics you may want to avoid
the time before the Alpha release or the time after the feature freeze
or the Final freeze.
We normally aim to schedule Test Days on Thursdays; however, if you want
to run a series of related Test Days, it's often a good idea to do
something like Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday of the same week (this is
how we usually run the X Test Week, for instance). If all the Thursday
slots fill up but more people want to run Test Days, we will open up
Tuesday slots as overflows. And finally, if you really want to run a
Test Day in a specific timeframe due to the development schedule, but
the Thursday slot for that week is full, we can add a slot on another
day. We're flexible! Just put in your ticket the date or timeframe you'd
like, and we'll figure it out from there.
If you have any questions about the Test Day process, please don't
hesitate to contact me or any other member of the QA team on test@ or in
#fedora-qa on IRC. Thanks!

"A new section has been added to the SysV Initscripts section, discussing
the proper use of subsys locking. Even though Fedora packages should no
longer be using SysV Initscripts as a primary service mechanism, Red Hat
Enterprise Linux and EPEL do. Additionally, Red Hat points partners to the
Fedora Guidelines when they build for RHEL.

FUDCon Paris Updates: Subsidy requests opening, hotel reminders

2012[2]<https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue296#cite_note-21>
"Greetings! (...or perhaps I should say.... bonjour!)
I'd like to share a few reminders and announcements regarding the
upcoming *FUDCon
in Paris, France, on October 13-15, 2012*.
If you are planning to attend FUDCon and need a travel subsidy to do so,
the ticketing system is now open for those requests. Requests will be
accepted through August 15, 2012. Please note that funding requests without
a ticket will not be considered. Preference will be given to attendees from
the EMEA region who are actively contributing to Fedora, and have detailed
their participation plans for FUDCon in their request.
To place a subsidy request, please follow these steps:
1: Pre-register at [3]<https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue296#cite_note-22>
- and put an X in the $$$ column 2: Read about the funding request process
and place a funding request ticket in the FUDCon-planning ticket tracker
here: [4] <https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue296#cite_note-23>
Additionally, a few notes regarding the hotel in Paris:
There are other events in Paris during this time period; most notably, our
first day of FUDCon will be taking place at the Open World Forum
conference, on the day in which the public is encouraged to participate in
and learn about open source projects. OWF had nearly 2000 attendees last
year. Accordingly, rooms might be in short supply as we approach FUDCon;
please, book your hotel as soon as possible, not only for affordability
purposes, but also so that you have a bed to sleep in. :)
We currently have a rate of EUR81 per night at the ibis Paris La Vilette
Cite des Sciencesfor the nights of the 12th, 13th, and 14th of October.
However, this rate will expire at the end of August, and any remaining
rooms in our block will expire.
For instructions on booking your hotel, please read the Lodging/Hotel
section of the FUDCon: Paris wiki:

Fedora 18 schedule slips by a week
"At a go/no-go meeting of the Fedora QA Team, the developers decided to
postpone the release of the first Fedora 18 alpha by a week. The team
unanimously voted to not go forward with the release because of the
relatively large number of blocker bugs that are still unresolved."

Build F-18 collection packages for all language translators
by Noriko Mizumoto
Hi Fedora package maintainers
Please build and push your package with latest translation file (e.g.
pull from Transifex/Zanata) for L10N QA test BY THIS FRIDAY 2012-08-31.
Your packages with latest translation will be composed into test live
image on 3-Sep Monday. Then various language translators worldwide will
test the image in their own languages. Any issue will be filed as bug.
This is only one chance for translators to check and modify Localization
quality of your packages by checking UI, and we need your help.
Thank you so much.

Fedora 18 Alpha to slip by one week
by Jaroslav Reznik
Today at Go/No-Go meeting it was decided to slip Fedora 18
Alpha release by one week due to numerous unresolved bugs
[1] and incomplete test matrices for Alpha [2][3][4]. See
the meeting minutes [5] for more details.
As a result, ALL MAJOR MILESTONES, and their dependent tasks,
will be pushed out by one week.
The Fedora 18 Alpha readiness meeting is on Thursday,
Aug 23 at 19:00 UTC (3 PM EDT/12 PM Pacific). Please join
the meeting to sync Alpha preparations.
The next Go/No-Go meeting has been rescheduled to Thursday,
Aug 30, same time, same place (21:00 UTC, 5 PM EDT,
#fedora-meeting), just a different day!
Unfortunatelly due to family reasons (life does not respect
schedules) I'm not sure I'll be able to fix F18 schedule
until Friday... So please make sure to count with slip
before I'll update it. Reminder: schedule was moved to
my personal space [6]!
Thanks
Jaroslav

Join us on irc.freenode.net in #fedora-meeting for this important
meeting, wherein we shall determine the readiness of the Fedora 18 Alpha.

to determine if the release criteria are met for a particular release.
This meeting is called the Go/No-Go Meeting."
"Verifying that the Release criteria are met is the responsibility of
the QA Team."
For more details about this meeting see:

At-risk/incomplete Features review period extended by one week (2012-08-20)
by Jaroslav Reznik
Hi all!
FESCo decided to add one week to incomplete/at-risk Features review period,
see the current list [1]. This means the deadline is next FESCo meeting,
August 20, 2012.
So if you're in the group, you have another week to make your feature ready.
>From the comments I collected it should help a lot of features to get from
the red at-risk state to yellow fields. Please update the current status,
last update and comment current status. I'll update the list for FESCo then
(so again, let me know, to make my life easier).
If you think you can't make your Feature for Fedora 18, don't be afraid to
move it to Fedora 19. With six months release cycle it's already knocking
on the doors. Put the Feature to FeaturePageIncomplete category, set target
release to Fedora 19 and let me know (please, please) to update FeatureList
accordingly. It's not a shame, it's a clever decision to deliver the best
feature ever ;-)
Feel free to contact me with any question!
Jaroslav
