I fixed the pre-2.0 (1.6.8 to be precise) code to create a Debian
package which works (thus containing separate patches). Since the 2.0
tree is the current development tree, I won't submit those patches. I
made them anyway to get that version of cobbler working correctly with
Ubuntu, since cobbler 1.6.8 has a working Debian/Ubuntu import
function.
I already implemented some patches for the 2.0 tree which would make
cobbler more platform-independent. I have not fixed the actual import
of the Debian(-based) distribution(s), which I hope some other
developer might fix. If somebody is working on this, please let me
know!
Most of the fixes are very small and require the addition of an
additional dependancy: lsb_release. It's included with most
distributions and it's included in the LSB. Will this additional
dependancy be a problem/dealbreaker? This is probably the only tool
which allows an easy way to check which distribution (and version)
somebody is running. If this dependancy would be an issue, I would
need to edit my patches. Let me know, so I can edit the patches a bit
more and then submit them to this mailinglist.

A few different people were working on it during cobbler pre-2.0. The
various patches were never in a fully working "complete" state. The
original cobbler author didn't want to ship a 1/2 working and 1/2
broken feature so support was pulled. However, he always wanted
working Debian and Ubuntu support. If you get it working by all means
post the patches to this list for review.
