Clarification for some make restorestate functionality.
by Michael Jansen
Hi
This is a question for those of us that develop cobbler/run it directly from git. Why is this needed
in restorestate? After the installation all file permissions and ownerships should be correct. And if i
understand that correctly those files where note saved/restored.
if [ -n "`getent passwd apache`" ] ; then \
chown -R apache $(DESTDIR)/var/www/cobbler; \
else \
chown -R www-data $(DESTDIR)/usr/share/cobbler/web/cobbler_web; \
fi
if [ -d $(DESTDIR)/var/www/cobbler ] ; then \
chmod -R +x $(DESTDIR)/var/www/cobbler/web; \
chmod -R +x $(DESTDIR)/var/www/cobbler/svc; \
fi
if [ -d $(DESTDIR)/usr/share/cobbler/web ] ; then \
chmod -R +x $(DESTDIR)/usr/share/cobbler/web/cobbler_web; \
chmod -R +x $(DESTDIR)/srv/www/cobbler/svc; \
fi
Does anyone know the reason?
If the file permissions are not correct after make install then we should fix that.

Cobbler running on SLES.
by Michael Jansen
Hi
One of the patches in opensuse cobbler package confused me a bit.
https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?project=systemsmanagement&package...
The patch users_patch.diff patches cobbler/action_reposync.py to do
$ chown -R root:wwwrun
after a reposync. But there is no wwwrun group in opensuse. The wwwrun user is in group www (see
below). Since SLES is a bit difficult to come by i wonder if there is a wwwrun group there and that
patch targets this platform.
$ id wwwrun
uid=30(wwwrun) gid=8(www) groups=126(git),8(www)
In cobblerd.py it just uses user wwwrun (no group) which seems to be correct.
And naturally i get this in a reposync log with the patch.
[...] - DEBUG | received on stderr: chown: invalid group: 'root:wwwrun'
Is someone here using cobbler on SLES (running. Not installing SLES)? I try to fix cobbler on
openSUSE and perhaps it would be nice not to break it on SLES while doing that. So if someone
running it on SLES here is willing to answer me some questions about that system if i need some
clarifications that would be nice.

Cobbler Release Planning
by Michael Jansen
Hi
For those that failed to notice i am currently working on better opensuse support for cobbler. I
collected a bunch of dirty commits in a work branch to see what would be needed to
- Fix the cobbler 2.4 packages from repo systemsmanagement (OBS)
- Upstream as many opensuse patches as possible
- Make it possible to build, install and develop cobbler from sources on
opensuse.
- Add support for virtualenv in modwsgi
http://code.google.com/p/modwsgi/wiki/VirtualEnvironments
- Try to ease multi distro support in cobbler if possible
I will reach a state in the next days when i will start to review, consolidate and improve my
changes to the state where i can do pull requests.
Now my question is where? The current release is 2.4 and afaics there are currently no plans for a
2.5/2.6? correct? There is only master which is quite a bit ahead of release24. At least it looks
that way. So does it make sense to submit some of those changes against 2.4? Will there be a
another 2.4 release?
If yes how are those changes supposed to reach master? Submit a request a second time? Are
they merged? I tried to merge and failed. Seems to not be possible.
