I'd like a cheap internal modem to be used for inbound and outbound faxing. (<$15) I suspect my only route is a Winmodem for that price.
I've searched a few sites but haven't had luck correlating modem to chipset used.
Can anyone point me to a compatible Winmodem for use under FC7?
Thanks! -Brian

Well, I know it was not your question, but consider buying a "real" modem (internal or external). That saves you LOTS of trouble compiling the kernel module for every new kernel and problems as abandoned code which does not compile with a new kernel version.

If you still prefer a winmodem then have a look at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/

linmodem.org might help.

Not so, Brian. Check out places like Salvation Army Stores or other second-hand places for old iron. I've found all kinds of stuff for 10 cents or less on the dollar.

Hi John,
I tried to compile drivers for an Intel HAM 536 on my F7 box and it's not working anymore. I don't use that modem, I have cable now. I used it on an Slackware 9 box 4 or 5 years ago :) .

I didn't think of the extra effort and trouble associated. Thanks for pointing it out. I think I'll shop eBay for a real modem and hope I can find one on the cheap.
Thanks again, -Brian

Another suggestion, for inbound/outbound faxing, look for a used "hp psc xxxx all-in-one series". I recently picked-up a 2210, at a yard sale for $2.00. The USB port was pushed in & the pins were snapped off. Took me ~1/2 hr. to replace the USB port with a soldering iron/soldaput. Excellent unit with outstanding Linux support.

Unless you're seriously into hassle, buy an external serial modem, PCMCIA modem, USB modem, or similar. Google is your friend, saw used on ebay for <$10, works POTS or cellular according to the spec. Bought one at a computer show for <$10 as well, and lots of old serial modems around.
I assume this is just for emergencies rather than an attempt to see how long a download of FC8 would take on dialup...
