Hi all,
I upgraded my T41 with the latest kernel this morning. It crashes during startup when it tries to start X without any error messages.
Ctrl-Alt-F1 gets me nowhere. I also have not disabled Ctrl-ALT-Del for these situations but it's not reactling either. The machine can not bepinged' from another machine either.
I'm back on build 724 and most things work, Firefox still crashes from time to time and X still terminates without warning every now and then. So far, I have not been able to establish a pattern.
VMWare seems to make the kernel panic on occasion (Panic message doesn't appear on the X11 screen but the caps-lock LED starts flashing, indicating a panic).
I already have lm_sensors disabled.
Any ideas to make the T41 more stable will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Chris
Yes, I have run this about 2 weeks ago - let it run all night, came back clean.

Chris,
I also run a T41 without any problems. Here are the specs:
T41 => 2373-9FU 1.7Ghz CPU 60GB 7200RPM drive 1.5GB ram
running kernel: 2.6.10-1.737_FC3
The only problem that I've had to date was a mysterious sound issue where all of the sound devices in the mixer seemed to be muted.
I'm having some issues with usb-2.0 but from what others write it doesn't seem to be specific to my laptop.
I'd be happy to share any configs with you.

I've had no trouble booting any of the recent kernels on my T41, but I'm still stuck on 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 because subsequent kernels all freeze on resume from APM suspend and ACPI suspend consumes battery power at the same rate as when the machine is powered up. Haven't tried the USB or sound features of recent kernels.
Any other TP users noticed these issues?
More on the OP's note below.

You might try starting in runlevel 3 and running "system-config-display --reconfig". Also, check /var/log/Xorg.log. Which display do you have?
Ctrl-Alt-F1 gets me nowhere. I also have not disabled Ctrl-ALT-Del for these situations but it's not reactling either. The machine can not bepinged' from another machine either.
Not surprising. Once the machine locks, it won't react to anything. This is what I see on APM resume.

Firefox does crash from time to time--that's not T41-specific. X still crashes occasionally when running 3D screensavers (also not T41-specific), but I don't run screensavers on my laptop. I haven't tried VMware on the recent kernels either. On the older kernel, VMware sometimes causes hangs when shutting the host down, but it hasn't caused any panics for me. Don't know about more recent kernels.
I already have lm_sensors disabled.
lm_sensors shouldn't make any difference on Thinkpads any more, but it can't hurt to have it off. On the other hand, turning it off hasn't prevented any of the problems I described.
Any ideas to make the T41 more stable will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Chris

kernel 2.6.9-1.724_FC3 is running with 'few' problems. kernel 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 used to run with almost no problems.
I tried the 2.6.10 kernels (build 737 and 741) and am not running very successful. 737 would panic during boot up when it detected the SCSI card (Adaptec SlimSCSI-1480 Cardbus card). Yeah, that should be fine... those warning statements are more of a "CYA" clause then anything else. I'm told that versions of VMware workstation before VMwareWorkstation-4.5.2-8848 had troubles but this version works well for me.
I have the bluetooth, acpi, modem all working and can share code/configs. The only trouble I had with acpi was a local mysql server running seems that it needs to be stopped before hibernating. pmail me for any of the configs and best of luck.

yes, they are both PCMCIA cards (the IBM is one of the few machines that still have 2 slots, I guess - one of the reasons, I bought it). I have no bluetooth installed at all.

I had to d/l the firmware and had to build the kernel module initially. Later FC3 kernels seem to have the module built in.

I didn't think it would make a difference either. Would be quite a blunder if somebody messed that up ;).

I have not used the modem at all. The internal ethernet card (Gigabit wired) is working just fine, too. All my configs are stock standard, except ntp config where I set up a few other non-redhat time servers.
Maybe the crashes are just part of the package deal for teying to be at the bleeding edge?

Hi all,
I finally solved the issue with the machine crashing all the time. I had a second memory module installed where I got the machine from - PC2100 SO-DIMM, but this machine needs PC2700 memory. I took the memory out and all is well, except the sound isn't working (the alsamixer trick doesn't work here) but I believe, this is a known issue with thinkpads.
Any idea when this will be fixed?
Best regards, Chris

The problem is that there is no sound. There is a little trick that some people have suggested: open alsamixer and set Head Phone Jack Sense and Line Jack Sense to 'Mute'. But that hasn't made a different. system-config-soundcard has detected the card but when I click the 'Play Test Sound' button, there is only silence. Volume level is about 3/4 up.
I read somewhere that this is an unsolved issue in Thinkpads. Another unsolved issue seems to be, that I can't get the machine to sleep. It worked once, only once, but when I woke it up again, it went to shut itself down (clean). This is one area where I must say, Apple did a great job with OS X and their Powerbooks. My powerbook goes to sleep within less than a second and wake up is instant.
Best regards, Chris
PS. Trying sound from KDE instead of GNOME - same (no) result.
On my Dell Inspiron I had a problem with no "Fn" key * Function key commands were recognized and found after researching the problem this is solved by editing grub.conf to include "acpi=off" on the line that calls the kernel. Once you reboot and make sure APM daemon is running your "Fn" Key + Sleep key should work.

I have a T41 running FC3 and I have sound. There was an issue with sound in the latest 2 stock kernels, but recompiling seems to have made that issue go away.
As far as suspend, try Software Suspend 2. I use it and I suspend in about 30 seconds and resume just fine. Again, compiled kernel is the only way to get there.

I used to build my own kernels in the pre-2.0 era. But the current kernels require too much knowledge of your hardware - so I have not made any attempts lately. What I would like to see is the config file that is used to build the stock kernel, or how else are kernels built these days? Did you simply run rpmbuild --rebuild? In which way would that differ from the stock kernel? Or did you use your own config file? If so, could you send me that and some more insight in how to compile the FC3 760 (or so) kernel (not the stock 2.6.10 kernel ;).

SOUND!!!
and I feel so stupid.
After reading some other messages about some buttons on the ThinkPad, I fidgeted around with the volume buttons (mute, volume up and down) and didn't expect anything to happen, since I got no visual feedback. Then, suddenly someone on my GAIM buddy list dropped off and there was a jingle - what a surprise!
Sorry for wasting everybody's time on this issue, should switch my brain on, the next time :).

*Software* provides the visual feedback. You need tpb and xosd RPMs. These are in Fedora Extras, although I haven't tried those versions yet.

Chris,
Bummer about the sound... you don't have the hardware mute on do you? (sorry if this is an obvious question). I had to unmute everything in the volume control and then go back and remute things one at a time.
I have suspend to ram working. I found a website documenting it all but can't find the link right now.
Essentially what you need to do is create a few files in /etc/acpi/events
$cat lid.conf
event=button/lid action=/usr/local/bin/t41-suspend.sh
$cat shutdown.conf
event=button/power.* action=/sbin/shutdown -h now
$cat lid.conf

$cat /usr/lib/bin/t41-suspend.sh
#!/bin/bash echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep && /sbin/hwclock --hctosys
And if you are running Gnome and have the battery monitor right click on the battery and select preferences
change the suspend command to be: sudo /usr/local/bin/t41-suspend.sh
Then run visudo and add the following: hhoffman ALL= NOPASSWD: /usr/local/bin/t41-suspend.sh

Hi Harry,
I tryied this. The suspend seems to work, but when it wakes up, it looses the mouse on USB.
Traded one evil for another.
I'm using the trackpad mouse right now, until I can reboot. I also installed the latest kernel (760) but there is still no sound.
