This made it worse because all I get is 1280x1024 using this xorg.conf. I
copied what appeared to be the relevant lines from the xorg.conf file that
I had
made for Fedora 7 and the Intel video chipset a while back when I first
got this
widescreen monitor. Obviously, I've missed something somewhere.
I would like to get this going without having to install the proprietary
ATI
driver, if I can.
So... what can I do now?
x.org software seems to over ride xorg.conf with what it thinks it has
detected from the queries of the card and monitor. Modeline no longer seems
to set anything. Even if xvidtune fixes a display problem, the found
parameters won't hold in xorg.conf. You can look at xorg.0.log in /var/log
to see what is being detected. The proprietary drivers do a better job but
Fedora is changing faster than the updates to the drivers. Rawhide is off
the bleeding edge. Also it seems that one either has a new card that
doesn't have drivers yet or an older one that has fallen out of the support
window.
