I always do a 1:1 backup. I tried doing compressed and found that
sometimes the compressed file got corrupted and plus there wasn't that
big of a space savings for me. The other problem is that if I needed a
backed up file, I could just access it directly to get what I needed.
somehow missed original post to know if you are using tar or some other for
doing your back up, so this is just a side note for backups.
try using cpio, no compression before. if your back up gets corrupt, cpio
will skip it.
