A few months ago, I installed F8 and tried to set it up for dial-up. I couldn't get it to connect (perhaps there were some problems with the install).
So, I re-installed F8 (formatted /, but left /home intact). I'm _still_ have problems - and it seems to be the same issue.
I had to modify wvdial.conf to get even this far (wvdial flat out refused to work with the default, as configged by Admin > Network).
[Modem0] Modem = /dev/ttyS1 Baud = 115200 SetVolume = 4 Dial Command = ATDT Init1 = ATZ Init3 = ATM1L4 FlowControl = CRTSCTS [Dialer enternet] Area Code = ### Username = mpk2 Password = ****** Phone = ####### Stupid Mode = 1 Init1 = ATZ Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 Inherits = Modem0
Here is output (bad characters removed):
[root@localhost etc]# wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Sending: ATM1L3 ATM1L3 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Sending: ATDT########## --> Waiting for carrier. That much probably looks good. BUT, I can't do anything! (Actually, it will ping, but no www access.)
Network apparently has a problem with the setup - I activate the dialup config, and somehow it gets deactivated.
What's going on?

Do you have any other network interfaces? You might want to check the default route to make sure it is through the PPP interface when dialup is active. If you have a default route set, then it is probably not going to be changed when the PPP connection comes up. I know that used to be the case, but I have not checked it in the last couple of versions. (I don't use dialup often.)
If you can ping by IP address, but not host name, then check /etc/resolv.conf to make sure the name servers are being updated.

I don't know if the drivers have gotten better but when I used dial-up internet access with Linux several years ago, I had to get an external modem that I found in the Hardware Compatibility List (US Robotics, I think) before I could connect. I spent many hours trying to configure several Winmodems and never succeeded. Once I switched to a modem that was documented as being Linux compatible, it was easy.

hi Bruce, I had tried in Fedora Core 1 & 2.... does not support win modems. Since, ADSL routers and stuff...... you need a NIC and LAN? You have ADSL or broadband? If yes, use the LAN and setting router and you are ready to go.....since fedora 8 supports many LAN chips.
thanks

I had similar problems with Fedora 8.
Setup your modem through system-config-network. Then from the command line issue 'ifup' to start the connection, ifdown to close the connection. Do it as your user id, not as root. The problem I had was I started the ppp connection as root and started my browser as user. You could also use "modem lights" to start the connection by changing the command it issues to ifup and ifdown.
I also made changes to wvdial, but I discovered it was unnecessary.

I never tried ADSL. Just regular dial-up with Red Hat 7 and Fedoracore 2.
Now, I connect via an ethernet LAN with a Fedoracore 2 box.

hi Bruce, if you are using ADSL router modem, you just need to key in the login details to router during initial installation by connect to it through its default webpage url usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 depending the the manufacturer of the ADSL router modem. After that using the same LAN link to it you can surf the web, since most LAN NICs are supported by Fedora nowadays. So, the router keeps the account info for you. And, if you plug in a switch to the router modem, and add more computers set with DHCP. And that's it. Rather than worrying about dial up.
thanks

If you can ping by IP address, but not host name, then check /etc/resolv.conf to make sure the name servers are being updated.
Network Mangler blows mine up, so I don't have it running. Are you out in the country?? If so, you may have to do what I do and limit your connection speed to 28.8. using s32=98 <---little 's' ...in your init string. Without it, I can't get connected hardly at all. Mikkel is also right, check /etc/resolv.conf after you connect, to see what's there. Since I use KDE I use KPPP to handle my modem, instead of Network Mangler. Works like a charm and is easy to play with. You might also consider doing a google on modem init strings to make sure you have the best init string possible. One bad instruction set and a modem is just about toast. My two-cents, Ric
