I assumed that Stanton Finlay's FC5 instructions would be near enough to get me going, but I seem to be brain-dead today. I got to the point where he says I should make a link, but it seems to me that I need more steps before that. /opt now contains jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586.rpm, and not the subdirectories that he lists in the link. 'yum localinstall' said it couldn't open the rpm. 'rpm -Uvh' lists failed dependencies.
I know that people are using java with FC6, so what am I missing?

Sounds like you downloaded the wrong file. I just used his instructions a few days ago to install Java to my FC6 box, so they do work. I can't get to it now, but I recall there being a self-extracting rpm and .bin file. If you run one of them, you get the rpm, if you run the other, you get the directory structure he speaks of.
I followed this instructions: http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#rpm and it works great for me. Just remember to check the example strings so it match your version!

<bangs head in disgust> That sounds like exactly the same problem as I had when I installed it on FC4 </head banging> I'll try again tomorrow, thanks

OK - started again, and this time all is well for the first part - the plugin is installed and the link made - I think! Carrying on with the instructions, when I get to 'which java' I see '/usr/bin/java' instead of '/opt/jrel......./java'. Have I gone wrong again?

You haven't gone wrong. You need to add the path to the java compiler to the user's path or to the global search path is all.
Good Luck, James

My fault. I had pasted the export lines, forgetting to change the version number. Once that was done I got the correct response. Thanks for answering

I strongly recommend avoiding Sun's packaging of Java and instead following Paul Howarth's instructions for installing Sun's Java in a manner consistent with JPackage conventions.
http://www.city-fan.org/tips/JpackageJava
You'll end up with a more consistent Java environment following JPackage conventions.
Even Sun is adopting JPackage conventions as they move towards open-sourcing their JDK:
"Several jpackage.org conventions, such as directory and Java plugin library naming have been chosento align with the jpackage project (JPP)." -- https://jdk-distros.dev.java.net/faq.html

I allways use JPackage conventions with Fedora and RHEL, and my script from the last link works fine with FC6. It just doesn't adds the Java plugin to Firefox. But I heard FC6 can do that using alternatives...

Hi Fernando,
Thanks for reporting that your script works fine on Fc6. It should make getting a JPackage compliant install of Sun's Java on Fedora just about as easy as the Ubuntu folks can (they have it in their repo as they are a bit more liberal in what licenses they accept).
I'll be doing a clean install of Fc6 on my home system this weekend. I'll try your script and report back on my success.
Dustin
Hi Dustin,
My script does not but automate JPackage steps for building JPackage-compatible packages for Sun Java.
I like to use GCJ, but some applications I need still requires Sun Java. I think Fedora should come with a menu item next to "Add/Remove packages" that run scripts like mine to download and install some non-free applications like Sun Java, Flash, RealPlayer and media codecs, making life easier for users that need (or just like) those apps. It should not be required to dig into mailing lists and web pages to install such software.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, folks. On this occasion I stuck to the Stanton Finlay instructions, but I'll bear this in mind for another time. Maybe when I install on another box I'll try your way, and see how it compares.
