The name has changed (didn't you see all the discussion on this list about that?) [sarcasm off].
I think you want to look for kmod-catalyst now.

Unless you own a card _not_ in the HD serie. In that case there's no binary driver for F11 and you need to stick with the open source driver

Thanks for the info. I found out it won't support my Ati Radeon Mobility 9200 AGP 1002:5C63

Then you are stuck using the radeon driver and waiting for them to finish 3D support for it. Say: "Thank-you AMD/ATI!" We used to have working 3D drivers for these cards, but no more (on recent kernels) until the radeon driver finishes support for them.
Its really nice to know that my 2 1/2 yo laptop video is "obsolete".

I'd rather have them provide the documentation versus providing a proprietary driver. So unlike you, when I say "Thank you AMD/ATI!", I actually mean it.

I have a Dell laptop that came with a ATI video, I found myself a mini-card that had Nvidia on it and made the change.
Actually, a good question for ATI users right now is:
Does any supported linux distro still come with the old, obsolete, pre-DRI2 version of X where radeon support was actually quite good?
Or maybe the question is: How hard would it be to build a X release for fedora that uses the older X?

Some preliminary googling has shown me that while nVidia lists laptop cards on their site, trying to find anyone selling *just* the laptop card (without the rest of the laptop) seems to be a losing proposition. Or, maybe just for the 2-3 cards I was looking at? 8400M/9400M/9600M
Where did you find yours? Are they cost effective vs desktop models (ie < US$50)? I've no problem opening up my system and swapping the card, I just can't seem to find anyone selling what I'm interested in....

Or maybe, how can I help Airlie and Ajax get things working better?

I went from no X on a HD4870 to decent enough 2-D performance in a matter of 6 months. I am very hopeful, just wish I knew enough programming to help out more directly other than just using the drivers and report bugs. :-\

Testing is important too. If you didn't participate in the tests when they happened. I think it is OK to still do the tests and report the results.

Thank you Bruno for the info. I had no idea such a test day was being organized. I will definitely put in my results as soon as I download the Rawhide Live CD. For others interested please visit https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2009-09-09_Radeon for more details.
I should be reading the Fedora Weeklies. If I had done that, never would have missed it.

Sounds like a good reason to never toss a "broken" laptop.
