This is likely because your system is configured to use the OSS driver.
In 2.6, the OSS drivers are deprecated in favour of ALSA.
Arjan disabled OSS modules a few days ago. For info, the Fedora
development kernel will be going the same way real soon.
That will be a pity, as the ALSA driver does not appear to work
with my Sony Picturebook C1VFK, while OSS (ymfpci) does work.
lspci reports the sound devuce as: Yamaha YMF-754.
