I've been asked to look for notebooks for my office that have built-in serial ports. We've already used USB-to-serial adapters and port multipliers with mixed success; we are kind of leery of using PCMCIA serial ports. And we'd like to use these notebooks on the go so docks are out of the question. Can I get the big OEMs to sell me a few of these or am I out of luck with them?

Wow, with /serial/ ports? Doh. I don't know, I would suspect the manufacturers don't make many with serial ports any more. You might get lucky. My USB to Serial adapter works perfectly every time. Are you needing more than one serial port on the notebook?
So far I've found the Toshiba Tecra A9-S9013X; everything else is available as refurbs. I think we may need more than one serial port one day, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I don't think I have ever seen a laptop with a serial port. Might be a few, but they would be industrial use type machines. (Does the Panasonic TuffBook have them?)
You may be SOL.

I have a couple of very old notebooks that have 9-pin serial in them. Nothing within the last 5 years though.

They used to be very common. I have used several Thinkpads, and a couple of Toshibas that had serial ports. But once you get past the P-3 class machines, they get to be rare. For that matter, finding a laptop with a PS/2 port is getting hard to find as well.
I have sitting here a Thinkpad I1500 class machine that Has 1 serial, 1 parallel, 1 USB, 1 PS/2, and 1 VGA port, as well as a modem connection. Then again, it also has both a 3-1/2" floppy and a CD-ROM drive. (Both drives in the machine at the same time.) When was the last time you saw a laptop with a floppy drive?

Some of Dell's Latitude line still have them. I've got a D820 here with one, I believe the D830 (current model) still has one. According to emperorlinux.com the D520 and D630 have them also.

You just have to be careful about the adapter you use. Not all of them support the RS-232 control lines, and a lot of applications require them. Serial ports are still widely used by control equipment. (Building lighting controllers, PLCs alarm controls, etc.) I picked up an Itronix T5200 for these applications, because it can survive abuse better then a laptop. (It is even extremely water resistant - 3" rain/hour.)

Nothing within the last 5 years though.
My DELL Latitude D810 has a serial port and it is only a year or two old (I think)
I just took a look at a few ( 6=sew? ), all different brands and all less than two years old. They all had a 9 pin serial and a 25 pin parallel. And that doesn't take into account their docking stations. One lucky bastard also has 4 USB ports!

Well in my defence I meant that we had no laptops here with serial ports newer than 5 years old. Not that there weren't any, just that we didn't have them. Sorry for the confusion.

---- there's still a demand for them because of various serial devices such as routers/switches/etc.
I would expect that this is a need that will continually be filled by some for quite some time.

Awesome!!! The 520, 630 and 830 all have serial ports. I'm a happier camper today. :)

Another manu/model: hp compaq_nx6120 {superseded last year) and hp compaq nx6320 {superseded a month ago,but might be able to still get it}. Both have RS232 com ports.

I guess you could just call a Dell rep. He can give you Tech sup. where they can give you all kind of flavoured details. (even those not mentioned on their website) I'f U'r in the US&A you might ask for the linux support of those models ;)

The ASUS have/had them recently, I have a few here. Beware the USB stuff, in general they aren't really RS-232 compliant, the standard calls for +/-12v signalling, and many "serial ports" try to fake it with 0-12v, which really, really, doesn't make it talking to some devices.
