Something in the configuring isn't setup cause I remember doing this
before, like year or 2 ago and had to get it set right.

What do you get if you do....
telnet localhost 143 and then enter ....
a.000 login username password
I don't use dovecot.....but there should be logs and you should be able to
do
journalctl -b 0 -u dovecot
