Does anyone here use wake on LAN?
Here is my situation. I have an old computer that I set up to be a web server and remote ssh machine. It runs all the time. My personal desktop, currently running F7 x86_64, I turn off except when I am using it. I recently started experimenting with wake on LAN to be able to remotely turn on my personal desktop from the web server machine. I found a Perl script, wakeonlan, to send the needed packet. Wake on LAN is enabled in the BIOS for my personal desktop machine.
Here is the issue. If I turn on my computer and turn it off before it leaves the BIOS screen (that is, before booting Fedora and shutting down), I can successfully turn on the computer over wake on LAN. However, if I have just shut down from Fedora, wake on LAN does not work. The NIC seems to be on after shutting down like I would expect, but it just does not work. I do have a copy of WinXP Pro installed for dual-boot, but I have not tried using wake on LAN after booting Windows (I can try that sometime).
So, finally a question. Is Fedora (possibly) doing something that would disable wake on LAN for the NIC when I shut down? If anyone has some experience with this, I would appreciate some help. Thanks.

In my case (Asus board, integrated nVidia nForce NIC) I had to use some more tricks. Fedora applies ifdown on eth0 when shutting down and it successfully deactivates WOL. I had to activate eth0 just before power goes down.

I'll have to give this a try on some machines that have never worked, yet claim to support WOL. The only way I ever got WOL to work was if I had a linksys NIC with WOL support. For some reason they always work and nothing else has ever worked.
Maybe linksys ignores the instructions to disable WOL?

It might be the case - but at this point I'm not an expert. :) I have noticed that if you activate WOL and the execute ifdown on them some NICs "switch off" completely anyway and some stay active. I guess the reason is different driver implementation but I might be wrong.
If you use the script I posted here it will be called from /etc/init.d/halt almost directly before poweroff.

You need a system that supplies enough power to the NIC while the PC is off (standby, really), for WOL to work. Some motherboards have jumpers for how standby power is handled (+VSB - positive Stand By, for keyboards, mice, other peripherals), and some have headers to to connect a power lead from the motherboard standby supply to a socket on the NIC.

Thanks. I tried just running this command as root before shutting down and it seemed to do the trick. Well, at least it seemed to. The first time I tried it, I didn't shut down properly (different issue) and it did not work. After running it and shutting down properly, it did work.
