When I try to use this command as root super user, it tells me it's an invalid command. any ideas? Apparently it is needed as part of installing the ALSA sound card drivers.

Use "su -" to switch to the root user instead of just "su". You will then get extra directories added to your PATH, including the one where the modprobe program is installed.

In my yahoo account, I can choose between sending plain text or HTML mails.

Hi, Check your $PATH variable and see if it contains /sbin, because that's where the modprobe command lives. Or you can just type /sbin/modprobe ...

Did you actually log in as root or did you get in to root by doing an su? If it was the latter you will need to do an "su -" This sources the roots rc files so that the correct paths are set for root programs.
After su, you do: cd /sbin ./modprobe
It works for me !
