You might try making a new initrd: mkinitrd -o myinitrd ...
As far as I can tell, initrd seems to have some control over /dev/root.

Dissected the initrd-images from -85 and -86 and found that yhe init-file
misses the folloeing:
echo Scanning logical volumes
lvm vgscan --ignorelockingfailure
echo Activating logical volumes
lvm vgchange -ay --ignorelockingfailure VolGroup00
