Hi;
I feel foolish posting here. This should be simple to do. But I am stumped. I have googled etc. and found nothing helpful.
I have a two computer home LAN. The network is properly set up. I can ping and ssh in both directions.
I have a working HP Photosmart C4200 series printer connected by USB to my BASEMENT computer. I am trying to set up printing for the UPSTAIRS computer over the LAN. system-config-printer on the UPSTAIRS computer does not detect the basement printer and none of the set up options it gives seems to work.
I would like the printer setup to 'just work' before I turn the UPSTAIRS computer over to a non-IT person who has just come off of using WindowsXP.
I am flumexed.

just a simple question: did you share the printer on the basement computer? (and iptables allows connetions to lpd?)

Yes

Right now I am running in Permissive mode.

If cups correctly Downstairs you should not have to configure it at all Upstairs. Do you see the printer Upstairs when you use the cups web interface?

BASEMENT: http://localhost:631 shows the correct printer. UPSTAIRS: http://localhost:631 shows NO PRINTER
As I said earlier, ping and ssh works in both directions!?

ok. i just read back where you said you do, but did note you were asked if you had iptables set to allow printing.
you replied you were in permissive mode. permissive mode is selinux, not firewall. you need to be sure you have iptables set to allow printing connections passing thru.

upstairs localhost does not show any printers from downstairs before you added a queue from downstairs, i would not expect anything else... so on upstairs you have to add a queue ferom downstairs.

And are TCP and UDP ports 631 (ipp service, not 515, lpd, which doesn't support autodetect) open to the LAN (your ethernet, not localhost) on both machines? (Note that "permissive mode" refers to SElinux, not iptables. Use system-config-firewall to set up ports on the network.)
Also, there's a setting in system-config-printer Server -> Settings to show discovered printers. IIRC, it is on by default, but it couldn't hurt to check that on the client.

Yes it is on by default. Double checked before replying and it is on. system-config-printer probes for any existing printers first then provides an installation page with several options. One option is HPLIP which I tried. It says it can't find a printer. (Actually I tried all the options -- none seemed to work).
I have had remote printing working before with different printers and different OSes.

check your upstairs computer to see that it is set for lan/external printing, set for correct printer config used downstairs.
check all cups settings and selection for correct printer and driver?
hplip, if an hp inkjet or laser printer, correct printer and driver? [please excuse any repeated questions]
will upstairs computer print to printer when directly connected?

The way this should work is that CUPS browsing makes the queue available to the upstairs computer. Use tcpdump/wireshark on the upstairs machine to find out if UDP port 631 packets are being seen. If so, the problem is most likely
* the firewall on the upstairs machine (which needs to allow incoming UDP port 631), or
* the CUPS sharing settings on the upstairs machine (which should enable 'Show printers shared by other systems' -- this is the default).
If you've tried both of these things, use the printing troubleshooter on the upstairs computer to try to discover the problem.

You shouldn't need to use system-config-printer on the upstairs machine; a minute or so after the firewall has been adjusted the queue should just appear in printing dialogs.
See my other mail in this thread. Sounds like you need to use the printing troubleshooter: Help->Troubleshoot from the system-config-printer menu.

Are they on the same subnet?
Or, if they're actually on different subnets, have you configured the IP addresses and netmasks appropriately?
hi...
thought this would have been solved by now!!!
try this.. since this is an internal (to your house) network... turn off all selinux/security stuff... as well as all iptables stuff.. the idea is to let everything pass, and let's see if you can get the printer to work when everything is wide open.
if you succeed, turn iptables back on.. and get the printer to work.. and then add seliunx...
get back to us on your progress...

Is there a /etc/cups/client.conf on the upstairs printer. Also are the printers on the same lan. One more think. Are you sure you made no configuration at all on the upstairs printer. Again this is specfically wrong. NO PRINTER CONFIGURATION AT ALL SHOULD BE DONE ON THE UPSTAIRS PRINTER!

See my other mail in this thread. Sounds like you need to use the printing troubleshooter: Help->Troubleshoot from the system-config-printer menu.
Solution: There are two possible reasons for the solution:
1. I opened both firewalls (server and client) on both machines. However, I did this fairly early on in the process and didn't see the printer upstairs. The question now is, which firewalls can I turn off and still have an operating remote printer? Will experiment 2. In the system-config-printer gui under services I entered my root password. Why I was being asked for my root password, I haven't figured out yet. One of these two changes did it for me.
Real Solution:
1. I quit p***ing around. Had a good dinner and a cold beer. Watched my home hockey team finally win a game. Let the frustration drain. Came back to the computers and started over with the printer slowly and methodically. Voilà 2. Old Dogs and new tricks. I have fought with printer installations since RH 7.4. I was sure remote istallation had to be more complex than it actually was. It really 'just works' now.
Congratulations to Tim Waugh and whoever else worked on getting printer installation to this advanced state!

On the BASEMENT computer: You said on another post that you're sharing the printer: could you post the contents of /etc/cups/printers.conf? Also post he output of "lpstat -t" Check that the line "Browsing on" exists in the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. Also do you see anything unusual if you do "service cups restart"? Are there any hints on the log files of incoming connection requests from the UPSTAIRS computer?

It's a system configuration, as such root authentication is required.
