Interesting suggestion: it didn't work, but at least I got the message that the
"Disk sda, sdb contain BIOS RAID metadata, but are not part of any recognized BIOS
RAID set. Ignoring disks sda, sdb".

No, but when you boot your system to you get any sort of splash screen that
displays a RAID configuration?
Also, you could try booting after disconnecting sdb to see if that makes a difference.
