Well, later in that thread I found this command suggested (but for a
different reason to mine):
killall -9 compiz;killall -9 gtk-window-decorator;metacity --replace&
Running that from a CTRL-ALT-F2 terminal whils the desktop was frozen
allowed me to get back to the gnome desktop where I could then disable
desktop-effects. Now I can reboot and log in with no problems - I've
just lost my beloved desktop-on-a-cube that's all..

You could file a bug with RPM Fusion[2] since it provides the nvidia package.
