Hi, I have a Server HP with this controller RAID:
00:1f.2 RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation 82801GR/GH (ICH7 Family) SATA RAID Controller (rev 01)
I have configure the 2 disk in hardware RAID-1 mode (F7 can manage this controller raid).
Fedora use this modules: # cat /etc/modprobe.conf alias eth0 tg3 alias eth1 tg3 alias scsi_hostadapter ahci alias scsi_hostadapter1 ata_piix
All work great, but the disk (and controller) do not warn if a disk is break (or hot-remove), until I reboot the server.
It's possible to monitoring the state of RAID controller via software?
Someone can point me on right way?

Hi, Dario,
I don't use RAID, so I cannot help you. It may just be that no one has the answer, or that they don't know the answer. This list gets about 100 emails every day. I generally read the ones I can help with and/or have an interest in, but I am new as well, but there are experienced folks here, and if they knew the answer, they would help you. I think you stated your needs quite well, and gave good information on your controller and system, but there are some utilities already available to monitor disks (I don't know about raid, though), and what you didn't say was what you have read on the web or in the list forum. If you have searched the forum and not found the answer, then you might add those references to your message.

I've never used RAID, but I'd imagine it's possible to find something prebuilt that can monitor it. I don't know whether smartd can be used with RAID, but in non-RAID situations it can produce a daily report about drive health status. And I see there's a mdmonitor service listed that describes itself as "software RAID monitoring and management" that you might want to find out what it can do.

If it's still understandable, that's usually not a problem.

The usual reasons are things like your situation is beyond the experience of other list members, or that someone familiar with it hasn't seen your message *yet*.

As the Intel RAID is software based you can use the smart utils on the underlying drives to monitor the drive health

Which HP server is this?
Have you checked HP's homepage for Linux information?
They might only have software for RHEL, but in some cases you can get it to run on Fedora.
Does the box have IPMI?

Thanks for all your reply!
But now I 'm a little bit confuse....
RAID md..... (mdadm, /proc/mdstat, init.d/mdmonitor, mdadm.conf, ecc) RAID dm..... (dmraid, dmraid.static, /dev/dm-0, /dev/dm-1, ecc)
My kind of RAID is a Software Raid or hardare?
MD: When I install Fc6 on this system, I must create a software raid on 2 disk. The system when boot see the raid device like /dev/md0 ecc (md..). I can use the mdadm tools for manage the raid, and I have a service for monitoring the raid state (mdmonitor) witch send to me a mail, and open/close many time the cdrom, and print on all printers the problem, and play some .ogg files, and ......
DM: When I install F7 I see in anaconda the RAID done and I not see 2 disk but one RAID. The system when boot see the raid whit /dev/mapper/ddf1_raid1p1 device. I can use the dmraid tools for monitoring the raid state. .... And the service for monitoring some kind of problem? there is or not? I must build some shell to put in crontab or inittab?
SMART: Smart monitoring the disk state, and not the RAID state ... right?
Then: How I can do for receive some type of warning when problems are manifested on the RAID?
Many thanks to all...
