I've upgraded from RH9 to Fedora Core 2. All went very smoothly. Only problem is getting sound working.
I'm using the Nvidia nforce drivers - downloaded the current set:
NFORCE-Linux-x86-1.0-0283-pkg1.run
Seems like a really nice installation script. No problems at first. Followed through their documentation and got the eth0 driver working, but I've some issues getting sound working using nvsound.
My modprobe.conf file is:

I don't know where the install and remove lines came from or what they do. Should they be there? What should be in this file?
You'll see 2 snd-card-0 entries. When using the snd-intel8x0 module I could get sound to work, but each time I reboot xmms is silenced and I have to go through sound card detection using system-config-soundcard. I can then run xmms with no problems
Following the nvidia release notes and replacing the snd-intel8x0 line to the nvsound line leaves me problems. When running xmms I get the "Cannot Open Audio" message box. However, when using system-config-soundcard *both* snd-intel8x0 and nvsound entries appear in the tabbed dialog and both work fine when clicking "Play Test Sound".
Should the snd-intel8x0 entry be there even when commented out of modproble.conf?
Finally, I'm also getting a few nvsound error messages in dmesg:

No, they are left over from RHL9. With Fedora Core 2, there should be entries which call alsactl to restore mixer settings made with alsamixer. Clean up all sound/mixer related stuff in /etc/modprobe.conf and rerun system-config-soundcard.

This is because you're missing the alsactl entries. Though, you need to be careful what output driver you choose in XMMS. Fedora Core 2 comes with ALSA, which also provides OSS compatibility drivers and device entries.

How do I get these alsactl entries?
My xmms is configured with the eSound output plugin - when I try to use the ALSA output plugin I get the following error message (when I start xmms from the command line):
** WARNING **: alsa_get_mixer(): Attaching to mixer hw:0 failed: No such device
I get similar error messages dumped to the console when running system-config-soundcard:

Any ideas?

Yes, except that you should delete the nvsound entry, too. First objective should be to get the intel8x0 driver working as reference. After that you can try installing the external nvsound driver.

Weird. If you have sound driver kernel modules loaded before starting s-c-s, that likely causes problems or confuses it.

Yes.

Test sound is played via /dev/dsp, which is an OSS compatible device. Other players very likely use ALSA or a sound server which in turn accesses ALSA device files.

I've removed the nvsound module (modinfo nvsound now says no such module or somesuch) but notice that the system-config-soundcard still remembers that nvsound was there at some point - oddly when I play the test sound button on the tab for this module it still works!!!

XMMS comes with a CD player plugin which can read audio CDs digitally. That doesn't need a cable between CD drive and sound chipset.

I've manually stored the settings as you suggested (using alsactl to create /etc/asound.state) but still the same problem.
On reboot no sound. No CD; No xmms; No system sounds.
After soundcard detection then system sounds and xmms but still no CD.
Can you just confirm that running system-config-soundcard should modify the content of /etc/modprobe.conf? It doesn't on my system. Maybe linked in with the settings vanishing on reboot.
Do you know what system-config-soundcard does exactly?

XMMS comes with a CD player plugin which can read audio CDs digitally. That doesn't need a cable between CD drive and sound chipset.
I can live without the CD player, but it *was* working before upgrading from RH9 to FC2.

Good question, but yes.
Everything worked fine before I upgraded from RH9. I imagine if I scrapped everything and did a fresh install instead of an upgrade then there'd be no problem - unfortunately not able to do this.
when i installed the nforce2 drivers, i had a few problems also. i don't know if sharing my experience will help, but here goes.
the installer kept erroring too fast for me to read what was going on. but before i figured out it made a log in /var/log/, i got the installer to work by logging outta X. in fact, i ran the installer after a fresh boot and it seemed to work.
next i remember editing modules.conf: alias eth0 nvnet alias snd-card-0 nvsound
then i rebooted. lsmod still showed forcedeth as my eth0 driver. now here is where it gets hazy. i can't remember if i opened up modules.conf again or modprobe.conf. well whatever i opened had the old aliases for eth0 and snd-card-0, so i changed them again to nvnet and nvsound. rebooted, and this time nvnet came up in lsmod. started X, but no sound! then i opened kmix and all the volumes were set to zero. i raised some of the volumes and started Juk...it played beautifully.
a bit of a side note, its worth every ounce of effort to get nvsound working. the difference between nvsound and the default driver for FC2 is like night and day. its so drastic infact that i thought my speakers were broken (or just shitty) before i got nvsound working.
i also have a bunch of install/remove lines in either modules.conf or modprobe.conf...its cool to just delete them?

Well, just for the record, I am unable to use nforce audio driver too -- no sound, but no errors on /var/log/messages either (at least nvnet works just fine). Any news on this front?
