Fedora 17 on a newer iMac, the sound is pretty much inaudible with

I've check alsamixer and the Gnome3 Sound control panel, nothing seems to be
shut down when the headphones are plugged in. No errors are indicated in
the logs. Headphone jack works fine under OSX. Anyone have a thought as to
how to work around this?
I have something similar. By default I get sound through the
headphones and not though the speakers. If I create
/etc/modprobe.d/local.conf, with contents
options snd-hda-intel model=imac27
I get the opposite - sound on the speakers but not on the headphones.
In both cases, nothing I do with alsamixer -c 0 makes any difference
to the other output.
This is on a new imac, with an up to date F17.
