I decided t to try "preupgrade" in the hope of preserving a lot of configuration. It ran for hours on my satellite connection but fails on install with "Error mounting device sdc2 as /mnt/f9: mount: special device /dev/sdc2 does not exist"
I'm not sure how to deal with this since an attempt to boot F-9 produces screens full of error messages.
The bios permits me to enable/disable individual drives. I began trying things there without success and went to bed ... I'm awake now and barely functioning.
Fortunately this F-10 computer is working and may be able to access the F-9 box although I haven't tried that yet?
Am I the only one with such a problem?
Waht to do next?

You should have check ed the install notes. Preupgrade is not adviced from F9-F10. Due to an Anaconda buf iirc.
Grab the DVD and u\g.

That was the answer I was given, when I tries u\g F9-10 with Preupgrade. Was told to do it DvD due to the way F9 anaconda interprets preupgrade.
It was some time after this: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2008-November/msg00386.htm...
But havn't a clue what the subject was.

Preupgrade worked fine for me from F9 to F10 on the half-dozen computers that I did it on.
With the exception that I had to boot most of them off of the rescue cd to reinstall grub afterward, but that's a minor issue and easily dealt with.

The story has changed. You said this was in install notes. Preupgrade worked for me, somewhat...I had to go back and increase my root fliesystem at one point, and after it was done, there were still a number of filesets to update.
In addition, there are still quite a number of fc9 RPMs still installed, mostly in the xorg set of programs...drivers that I don't really need, but I really didn't expect to see fc9 in the rpm -qa output.
