Is there any chance the problems with using the Sun Java plugin
with Fedora Core 4 or 5 will be resolved soon? I have been unable to
use the java plugin as installed by either the jpackage nosrc rpms or
manually installing the binary installer for linux on either FC4 or
FC5. This is across about 7 machines I have installed here. In all
cases I end up with a red X when I attempt to load the java applet
at the testvm web page...

This problem is really getting old and makes MacOS X look like a
better choice for a workstation.

ps I can't believe this problem doesn't get more discussion here
as it is a major regression. FYI, I tried the latest b87 release
of Java 1.6 and it doesn't work any better.
Probably does not get more discussion since most people have it working
just fine.
I installed the Sun Java packages using info from here:
http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_4_installation_notes.html#Java
This has worked just fine on all my systems.
There are similar instructions for using the jpackage method but I have
not used that. Some may find that preferable, but I find getting the
package directly from Sun works just fine. The link above details how
to setup and use the alternatives method that was introduced a while
ago.
Note that I have been using the 1.5.0_06 version of Java. Not sure if
the newer version has issues or not. You might want to try a 1.5
version just in case.
