Hi,
Recently my rather old HP Elitebook 2540p with an SSD in the upgrade bay running Fedora 27 stopped booting when not plugged on. The laptop is equipped with an 1st gen Intel Core i5 540M processor as well as an "Intel Corporation 5 Series" SATA controller (lspci output attached).
I first thought it is a kernel issue with 4.14.16-300.fc27.x86_64, but 4.14.14 is affected as well and it had worked for sure before. What I wonder - have there been changes to Fedora 27's power management recently - such udev scripts that enable mroe aggressive power management?
Any ideas how to debug this issue further? Is there a way to disable SATA link power management at the kernel command line?

I do / did - the value is changing depending whether the laptop is on battery or wall power. When on wall power, it is set to maximum-performance and I don't get any errors, otherwise the SATA errors start to appear.
Because the value is changed depending on power state (maybe by udev scripts), it doesn't make sence to set it statically.
What I wonder - weren't those changes targeted for Fedora-28? How did they slip into F27?

PS: I am running the machine now with SATA mode set to IDE in BIOS, which defeats all the power management issues.

The only thing I know of changing that value dynamically is TLP, do you perhaps have TLP installed?

Those changes are not in F27 and they do not change the level depending on battery vs wall power.

Indeed - thanks for the hint! I've remove tlp and now the system works stable with AHCI SATA mode again. I installed tlp because I read somewhere it can be used to read the number of charge/discharce cycles of a loptop battery.
I'll give F28 a try and see whether the changes there work fine for my machine - otherwise I'll file a bug report against the kernel.
