Well, I tried 'setterm -powersave on' - but it responded with "cannot
(un)set powersave mode".

Did you run it in an xterm, or on a VT you were logged into? It will
only work on a VT. I use something like:
setterm -powersave powerdown
setterm -powerdown 5
setterm -powersave on
setterm -store
It will not work if you try to use it in rc.local or any other
script that is not run on a VT.
